I am working on a dell inspiron n5010
The problem is that it will turn on and at a random time the screen will shut off
But The computer will still be running

I connected it to a monitor and i noticed when the screen shuts off the monitor will still be on.

How Can I Fix This?

You've already tried changing the Power Options in Control Panel?

Perhaps try it with the battery out?

Is it any different running on battery only?

"... monitor will still be on."

That is to say, you still see Windows running on the external monitor and have no problems running programs etc, but the laptop screen is blank?

I Should have added more details
I tried changing the Power Options in Control Panel
Took Out The Battery Same Problem

I tested by connecting it to a dell lcd monitor. Both the the laptop and monitor was on for around 15 minutes. then the laptop screen shut off but the monitor was still showing the display.

That is to say, you still see Windows running on the external monitor and have no problems running programs etc, but the laptop screen is blank?

Correct

Should I replace the screen?

If you have changed the settings, and it still does turn off, I'm leaning towards replace. Could be a power or signal issue with the screen itself. How old is the laptop? Original screen to your knowledge?

When the screen turns off sorry, does the laptop still recognize the screen being there?

Thanks, Sanjay.

If this is an LCD display with CCFL backlighting, as opposed to an LED backlit display, then I'd be inclined to suspect the inverter board.

If you close the lid and let the laptop go to sleep, then open it, does the screen work again? How about if you restart the system after the screen goes blank?

When the screen goes blank, if you shine a flashlight at it from various angles, do you see a faint image?

If anybody else has had this problem with an LED backlit screen, please feel free to post suggestions.

With led backlit, its a replace 9/10 times in my experience if the leds have gone out. Only because its not worth doing any more cause a replacement is far cheaper and easier. The 1/10 is the monitor connector isn't seated to the mobo properly. Thats why I asked if it was the original and if its new or is it old. The only other thing I got is the cable to the mobo has been pinched, and opening and closing is causing more and more damage. Most newer lcd screens on a laptop are led, less power consumption. I rarely see a laptop that's been made in the last 3 years that still has CCFL.

Sorry i got mixed up
It Is LCD

Dell INSPIRON N5010Size: 15.6-inch
WideScreen (13.6"x7.6")
Resolution: WXGA (1366x768)
HD Type: Glossy
Backlight type: LED
Video signal connector: 40 pin LED socket

That would be LED then.

Seems like an odd symptom, still. Anybody seen a LED backlit panel that randomly turns off like this (where it wasn't the display cable)?
