Dell Ryzen 1800X with ATI RX 580 no boot if connected to LG TV

This issue is driving me nuts. We installed a 4k tv as a monitor/display device to this machine.
The card has 4 ports. 1x hdmi and 3x DP. The TV only has HDMI.

So...I did hdmi-hdmi, and it will not boot. It won't even post, won't do anything. If I pull the plug from the tv and insert it into a different monitor, it fires right up. So...I replaced the hdmi cable. No joy.

I read a thing about doing weird input switching, and it sometimes works---if I unplug the cord to the tv, then change the input to TV, then plug it back in, then change the input to PC, it'll pick up---but only after the system is already booted.

So I dug around and found references to the LG TV expecting PC on hdmi and treating it differently if you name the port "PC", so I did that. No joy.

So I purchased a DP to HDMI cable and then ran duals---hdmi to working monitor, dp-hdmi to TV. No joy. Again, once it's BOOTED, I can plug it in and it works fine. If the TV is even plugged in, to any port, the pc will not even try to POST. But, again, if I pull the cord to the TV and boot to just the monitor, any time after POST it'll work fine.

I tried turning the TV to "cable" input, and then rebooting, but again, no boot if that cable is even plugged in. As soon as it comes out, she fires RIGHT up.

There is nothing that I can see in the bios to change.

ANY ideas? I'm on the most recent radeon drivers, board has most recent firmware.

Out of curiosity...
Do you have another PC you can try booting with the TV as a monitor to see if perhaps it's something with the HDMI port of the TV.

This gets my vote - from what you describe, I suspect the TV. I have a TV I'm trying to use as a wall display and it has never, not once worked "right". It works, but nonsense like this. I got it for free, so I put up with it for some reason.

I tried *all* the hdmi ports of the TV, I should add. Same behavior. I just attached my thinkpad and booted it, and it worked fine. I'll reboot here and get pics of the bios screens.

Look for a bios update on your Dell. I have a Optiplex that refuses to run an add on GX720 no matter what. I noticed dell has released a bios update concerning add on video cards. Release date was this month on the 12th. I did upgrade the bios but in my case it did not help. RMA'd the computer. Unfortunately, I bought a Inspiron to replace it. Arrives Thurs.

You might get by with bios update if it applies to your model.

Oh no....how can any self-respecting computer tech buy a Dell Inspiron for personal use. We're gonna have to take a couple of your street cred points for that. Now hang your head and think about what you've done.

Sounds like the pc can't handle the input of the TV until the driver is fully loaded.

Just like some PC's won't boot if a keyboard isn't attached sounds like it can't detect the tv thus no boot.

If you plug it into a different PC does it work

Actually, I was building a Ryzen 1700x system back before Christmas to use as a video editing machine, and then BestBuy had this thing on sale for about half the price that I could buy the components, so I went for it. It's been a great machine. It was like $400 less than it is now.

It only has this video card, I can't pull it, and yes my (much older) touchpad works fine when it boots with the TV attached. Deep googling reveals that there's something messed up between LG smart TV's and RX 580 cards. :/

Im not seeing a lot of difference actually. One big difference I have seen - The Optiplex had major issues running a lowly GX720 card. In fact, It refused to run it. When I fist installed it I had a bit of an issue getting it to run the video card. I did manage it with dual monitors (reason I installed the video card). Then client complained that the monitors where losing signal and then computer would reboot.

Went in and removed card and then on reinstalling it it flat out would not run. Card was recognized and all but refused to run the monitors. Even if I used a single port/monitor. In fact, I brought up the computer on the built in video chipset with the 720 still in it and tried installing the driver for the 720 and it just locked up. So, I took the card back to the shop and left them running on one monitor. I tested the video card and it ran fine in an older Dell Vostro. I did a bios update on the new computer and no such luck. I figure it is either a bad PCIe bus or something else on that model. I didnt want to go thru the same issue again with a direct replacement - banking on it being just a bad board. So, I went with an inspiron that I have ordered before and used in a work environment. These are small offices and I have never had an issue with them really. They work fine for a small workstation - although not expandable (as in adding another drive) but its just for a small business client.

The Optiplex came with built in 'display port' and HDMI. Thats it. I understand they are the new norm but then if you want to run dual display you have to find a monitor with those connections (which I didnt. I have the LG 24" with HDMI, DVI, 15pin).

In hindsight, It was probably a bad MB in the Optiplex. But I didnt want to take a chance and get the same exact problem in again. I went with what has worked fine in the past and played it safe. I will probably order in another Optiplex just to check out in the shop to see if the problem persists.

I've had these issues and resolved them by making sure the motherboard is running in single channel (either 1 or 3 sticks of ram).

Obviously not ideal, but the cards work okay
