Extremely frustrated with this laptop I've installed both an inverter and a bran new LCD screen but the screen is still dim, can barley see the Dell logo when it powers up...

Anybody have any suggestions, could it be the LCD cable???? when plugged into a external monitor everything is fine can see video and log into the OS.

Dell's are extremely picky about the screen that matches the inverter. Only way to fix that is to get an exact replacement for the original. If you don't have the original, I'd look up the original configuration from Dell and order the part number that it lists for the screen.

id recommend before buying anything check the board that turns the screen off, ive had a few faulty ones of them, also if your working on and older laptop with a button to dim the screen gunk can get stuck in that

It's probably not the LCD cable, because you can at least barely see the Dell Logo at boot. It might be the connection to the inverter. It also might have something to do with the sensor that lets the computer know when the lid is closed or open. If it is stuck in the closed position, it would make sense for the backlight to turn off.

Mmmm, if it was the lid switch wouldn't it turn the LCD off, not just the lamp? And if it thought the lid was shut it shouldn't be running the external monitor unless you've specifically set it up to ignore that. It sounds from your second description that the CCFL isn't coming on at all. I'm betting bad cable unless your replacement screen or inverter were bad.

Find another broken screen and hook it up to that inverter, if still get no joy at least you've got it down to the other two parts.

+1 for this. I got a replacement screen and it didn't work. Returned it and bought from another supplier all ok.

I've seen this in most laptops. I'm very careful to order the EXACT screen that is already in the unit. And in Dell's case, they seem to use different part numbers in the same model... Weird.

By really dim do you mean the backlight isn't coming on at all?

If I remember correctly there is a fuse on the motherboard right by the video connector on these models that seems to blow quite often.
