The Australian Government has banned the use of DeepSeek in government departments nation wide because of "Security Concerns."

No surprise here, but given the current geopolitical climate, anything linked to China is met with immediate suspicion.
While concerns over data privacy are valid, it's hard to ignore the broader pattern of preemptive bans driven more by politics than by demonstrated risks.

If privacy concerns over an AI warrant a ban, then what about the hundreds of thousands of laptops, tablets, and phones the government purchases - any of which could have vulnerabilities or hidden exploits at the firmware level?

China could have done well to hide things a bit better.

It's pretty telling when you watch an app running on a cell phone using DeepSeek, a ton of connections to Singapore (our side of the Great Firewall of China), and a few direct connections to Beijing. It's the connections to Beijing that are strange, this almost never happens.

All encrypted, so taking a peek at what's being transferred is hard.

Still DeepSeek is a good tool, and advancement. A meta-distilled model, interesting concept. And yes, I can run it on my own hardware which enables me to cut China out. Indeed Microsoft has already done this, AI Services in Azure has DeepSeek as an available model and it's absurdly inexpensive to operate.
