Datto vs Synology

I think you had mentioned on another post that it was the original Datto person. They were certainly easy to talk to on the phone and it felt like they were happy to be starting from scratch as they could change things that were too far down the path with Datto.
We also got the slide unit for free with a year committment which was an unexpected bonus.
Yup...Austin, guy who started Datto.
We had already shifted to Axcient before Slide came out...we started transitioning last year, Slide came out Feb of this year.
Else we probably would have looked at it...although, with caution....as Austin will sell it in a few years (since Kaseya bought Datto, hmmm....maybe sell it to Ninja or....

Yep. We seriously discussed that same concern...

After hearing endless complaints about fraudulent charges from Kaseya I have zero interest in giving them my bank info.
So, can Datto be purchased by the end user if a client wanted to use it? Or does it need to be resold via an IT company or MSP?

Datto...err...K-Mart...err...Kaseya...is "Channel Only".
Meaning, they do not sell to end users. At least that is how "Datto" did it. You never saw actual pricing, they never published pricing.

Datto still operates like it did before Kaseya largely, it is channel only, Datto has their own published rates and store etc.

The billing however... is a huge Kaseya powered screw up.

Yeah our newer Datto rep is feverishly reaching out to us....as we're still cancelling stuff. Cute girl too....almost makes me want to stick with them....lol.
The recent change to the partner portal though (including the store)...is pain-full-y slow. Ugh.

Yes... I dont understand what's up with Kaseya but if it's a web asset, and they host it? It's slow... it's horrible.

My day job is a Kaseya shop. Datto BDR, Datto SaaS, Datto RMM, Autotask... we're still on all of it. I'm in this junk every single day, and I hate it.

So, to clarify, if a potential customer already has a Datto device that hardware is owned by the existing MSP and is likely to have a contract in place some length for the Datto service?

Depends on the agreement. Most of the time the hardware belongs to the customer, but it may be financed via the subscription that's paired with it. That is to say, they're stuck until their Datto Subscription term ends. Even if they bought the hardware outright up front, they're still paying for the subscription on a contracted basis, and that's at least an annual agreement. Could be a three year agreement.

It can be transferred to you if you're also a Datto partner.
I took over a marina from a competitor earlier this year...he was also a Datto partner. Since we've been getting rid of our Datto devices for our customers quickly and moving to Axcient, normally we'd have just stuck an Axcient device onsite..but the competitor had this customer on a contract with Datto until Dec of 2025. So...we just had it transferred to our portal...for the remaining months of this year until it runs out.

It was a "Alto" device...which is usually FREE with a subscription....the "Siris" appliances are usually what costs quite a bit of money....we sold them outright to the customer upon signing them up with Datto...and just did our 2x markup on the subscription price.
