Data Transfer From 1 PC To Another PC

Hello, right now I normally back-up files on an external hard-drive then plug into the new computer and transfer. There's got to be an easier way. Wondering what other techs to do get the job done. What I'm looking for, transferring data from Windows XP (or Vista) to Windows 7. I know there's cable's out there that help connect the two PC's, would I need one cable for both XP & Vista or would I need 2 different ones? Do you suggest any that are good? Also what software &/or procedures are taken place to connect 1 PC to another and then transfer the data over? I feel like I'm somewhat stuck in the old days transferring data to an external hard-drive then onto the new computer, which takes A LOT of time. Please help. Thank you.

I have tried a few different transfer programs/tools and found they all pretty much suck money out of my wallet and that is all they do.

I remove the drive and attach it to the new CPU and transfer the files once only.

I dont have this model but you will get the idea from this Amazon listing.

I find that anytime you can get the drive attached via the motherboard it will go so much faster that using a USB device.

Move it once only to save time.

Well a network cable connects two computers with NICs.

Or you can do it via USB.

use a ethernet crossover cable and you can "network" the computers together.

You often don't even need a crossover one with modern NICs.

I keep a Tornado Transfer Tool in my toolkit. It requires no installation or configuration. I used it last week to transfer data from a Windows 7 laptop to a Vista laptop without problems.

+1 for Tornado Transfer Tool. It works brilliantly for transferring files between two working computers. I got mine on sale at Staples for $20. Paid for itself many times. I now only use use an IDE/SATA to USB adapter to transfer files from a non-booting hdd.

Thanks for the Tornado idea, seems like a really slick tool to have around. I did some searching and seems like the best price is at Tigerdirect for 19.99 with free shipping. I think I will have to get this! Much easier than taking out the hard drive or transferring files via a flash drive!

I use the good ol' network method! Just connect em up & if your doing a Windows 7 transfer then the built in software (mig wiz) does it all for you. Never really had a problem with this method

Moving the drive will usually be the quickest if transferring a lot of data; however, there is always the risk of dropping the drive and losing everything. I have not dropped a drive in this situation but I have read of folks here who have. Just something to consider.

Yes stripping a machine down is much quicker than plugging in a couple of USB cables, or a crossover lead, especially on a laptop with a single drive bay.

Nah, eSATA on a SATA2 card still beats USB3

I always use the USB to IDE/SATA method, cable can be bought of ebay for about £10

I agree with pcSAVANTS in most situations. USB has a lot of overhead compared to an ATA or SATA disk drive controller. The HDD controllers also have less file corruption than USB. Removing a disk drive is not what I would call stripping a machine down .

I do the same but generally use the network to transfer the files.

With Vista -> XP or XP -> XP I tended to have issues (mainly the network dropping out) but now with Win 7 don't have any issues at all.
