I wonder if it would be best to reinstall the OS first so that he has
a brand new, fresh OS. Then, reinstall all his programs and data using the
TM backup.

Since he bought an upgrade to OS X MT Lion, how would I apply that update
if I installed the older OS X version that comes on his discs?

If I am not mistaken you would have to install with his recovery disks first, and then re download the MT Lion installer from the app store using his or her apple id.

I suggest if you go that route to make a MT Lion 10.8 USB drive installer or DVD with the download. So in the future you don't have to worry about it.

If it won't allow you to re download MT Lion you may have to call Apple and ask them what to do. Pretty sure the first thing I said will work.

OR if you ahve a 10.8 installer disk just use that from the get go.
