Common question I get is what antivirus should I run on my PC? Most of these people have more Malware then anything. I usually just install MS Security Essentials and ADBlock for them, most of the time because they dont want to pay for McAfee or Norton.

Wondering what everyone else does or advises for future protection?

Many techs or repair shops will resell one or more of the solutions, including ones purchased during occasional sales at NewEgg, etc. If you want to go that route, I'd watch slickdeals.net for Bitdefender or Kaspersky sales. Those can also have both single- and 3-PC versions, so pick appropriately for households with 1 or multiple PCs.

If you really want free, Bitdefender does have a free version though I haven't looked into it hard having only business customers.

If you're a shop or setting up for the long term you might also look into something like Kabuto and use it for installing EMSISoft for your customers. You'll pay $2/month per machine for that, but if you can get them on a managed antivirus plan for $60/year then there's profit to be had there.

As a business it makes sense to sign up as a reseller of one or two AV brands.....
You start off making profit on the sale...and then you make profit again on the renewal...repeat...repeat...watch it grow and grow.
And as your sales history and volume as a reseller builds...you start to get bigger and bigger discounts on your purchases...thus you make more with each sale. Pretty soon you're making more than you would shopping for cheap deals from the back of some virtual unmarked van in an internet alley...

Plus as an official reseller you get more direct support, access to a sales rep for special deals, promotions, SWAG and marketing stuff to put around your office, etc.

As to what "brand"....you'll get a dozen different answers here.
Our primary brand for direct sale is Eset. I signed us up as a reseller of that since they were back with version 2.5 or so. We also did Kaspersky.
Since then, and since we do 99% business clients only, about 5 or 6 years ago we got an RMM, N-Able...and we started using that as our clients Eset licenses phased out. Since you make even more money through the AV of your RMM. N-Able was Panda back then, Bit Defender now.

Yeah no business customers as of yet but if it happens I would heavily suggest paying for something.

I guess this might be a good example...so pick this up ahead of time and try to resell

Im pretty small potatoes right now and I dont have much money to drop right away. Any recommendations on a AV for a starter?

I opened and edited my post to put down brands before I even saw your reply...but if I were to start over right now, I'd probably do Esets MSP package...or BitDefenders MSP package.

McAfee or Norton? Seriously? Even if you don't sign up for resell there are better brands to recommend. McAfee and Norton both have some of the worst reputations in the Tech World. Have a look at http://www.av-comparatives.org/ to see real world tests of products and how they hold up.

I know lol just random suggestions. Most people always want something free anyways so they usually end up with MS or now since you guys mentioned it maybe BitDefender.

Free you get what you pay for. I don't even bother to recommend anymore.
Couldn't agree more...although somehow ive dodged anything major for a long time now with just Adblock and occasionally running Malwarebytes/Superantispyware.

But seems like you guys really like ESET ill have to read up on it today

Think seriously about getting setup to sell a managed product. It's a great sales pitch. "You could buy A or B, but if you let me setup C, then you get good protection AND it will tell ME when something goes wrong, like it stops working, it stops updating or you get infected. That let's me bring my professional expertise to bear in your protection 24/7. Plus it helps to tie them to you somewhat for service.

That's why I mentioned Kabuto and their upcoming AV - I got the feeling that this was going to be small residential and that's the target they're aimed at.

Kabuto is something that will work good for @bword. Granted not everyone will bite on that in which case you should resell something like Kapersky or Bitdefender. After the virus removal is always the perfect time to up sell because the client has already experienced an infection on their computer. Throwing MSE on the computers you are losing out on profit. Check here often and sometimes you might come across Kapersky going on sale along with Bitdefender. I was able to stock up a couple weeks ago for upcoming year and I just resell them and make a nice profit off it.

You can also check out places like www.antivirussales.com and become a re-seller there.

I'm a McAfee partner. It has gotten a lot better this year since Intel actually got behind it. I know a lot of people will point to sites that rate AV's that show it not in the top 3 all the time, but in my (real world) testing it has worked great. I haven't had a PC get re-infected that I installed it on. Can't say the same about Kaspersky. I've had several get re-infected that I installed it on.

Wait what?

Its currently in the bottom 3 on AV comparatives...no wait im sorry if you count the default windows defender protection its bottom 4 because its below that. Not really sure how you have had kaspersky customers get reinfected but not mcafee, kaspersky is a mean little cuss that I refuse to use because it bullies unpopular applications that arent signed and absolutely hates my vbscripts with a passion but still I can not deny its probably the best AV at protecting a novice user.

They might be testing with the basic McAfee Anti-Virus, which I never use. I know what the charts say, but I still go with my user experience. I also don't push McAfee. I prefer to go with the paid version of Avast. I offer McAfee or Kaspersky 1-user license for $10 as an alternative if they don't want Avast.
