CRM on shared server seems unsafe to me

I have a client who wants to set up vTiger on a shared server, but to me that just seems unsafe.

I've told the client to use the business plan with the private ssl instead.

The server does have a shard SSL but is that really enough?
The shared server the client wants it on is Hostgator.

Their 'Hatchling', 'Baby' and 'Business' plans are all in a shared environment (i.e. many clients on one physical server with no hardware virtualisation), so there's no real difference between them (from a security standpoint).

As far as the Shared vs Dedicated SSL, I don't believe there is a difference except the dedicated SSL is signed, and won't throw an error in your browser - AFAIK they both operate the same (assuming the level of encryption is the same).

If security is a major concern, then a VPS or Dedicated Server is the best bet.

Ok, well I seem to be some what of a HG expert here. So I will give you the low down.

If security is your number one concern then yes go with a VPS or Dedicated Server.

As far as the SSL's go, The Shared is just a secure as the Private, it will just pop up with an error saying that the domain name you are going to doesn't match the domain on the SSL.

With the business plan you do get a dedicated IP Address and a free private SSL but, It is no less secure than the Hatchling or Baby plan.

As far as security wise goes then If someones account gets hacked on the shared servers then yours should be fine.

Thank you for your responses. I really wasn't sure bout the security of the server as I personally dont work with servers as I us a sub contractor for that type of work and I really dont know much about the Hostgator server system either. I was just concerned as the client is putting private information online about customers, so security is of up most importance. But not having a signed SSL is just fine as the only people accessing the site will be employees.

Now that I look back at this it should have been a lot clearer to me.
