Craigslist & You

Has anyone figured out how to post fairly often without ticking CL off? Like once a day or so? I don't want to make 7 different ads (but if I absolutely have to I will)

Just don't want all the posts dropped for being too similar

the OP explained it - just keep rotating the lines of the ad to the top of the list...

I am going to start experimenting with this today :-)

I gave craigslist another go today, and it didn't go well. Not even a few minutes after posting, (I'm assuming my competition) flagged my post and it was removed. :/ Looks like craigslist is a no-go here.

cha-ching.... on my way to pick up a machine thanks to my first try at this -- thanks for the great tip OP!

I did it just like the first post suggested, but changed most of the info to my own stuff.

Only placed a single ad two days ago -- you can be sure I will be repeating them more often now :-)

Unfortunate so many had bad results.

A more effective way - Is set-up multiple craigslist accounts, and pump a couple ads from each one from there.

Eventually you will have 10 or so advertisements in each account.

Then you can just hit renew (takes 48 hours for that button to pop) and you can renew 50 ads at once if you want (not recommended) -

and it bypasses a lot of the SPAM filters and such

With craigslist advertisments being so cheap I was wondering were you guy's lowering your price to match your competitor or standing your ground.

No I have not had that happen yet. You might get an occasional "can you fix ten computers" scams but I usually just flag it as that. And those will be in email form not over the phone.

i use to do craigslist ads but i got some very seedy customers through there so i stopped. in total i got 3 laptops with "i forgot the password" that turned out to be stolen, one attempted robbery (luckily for me i live in a concealed carry state and was able to fend that one off, without any bodily harm to anyone involved), and one roach infested machine that ended up costing me money to get the damn things out of my house, i opened the case and literally hundreds of roaches scattered out. after that i pulled my ads and worked more towards business customers, pounding the pavement to drum up business and word of mouth referrals. and as far as that goes my biggest clients so far are 2 pawn shops and a local rent to own place, all i do for them are n&p at 80 a pop, between the three i do at least 10 a week, so thats 800 a week for about the simplest work possible. one recommendation if you do that though is with the pawn shops depending on their policies if the customer comes back after it goes up for sale to pick it up they can pay it off so its good to save an image of the hd so they don't lose their data, i usually just have the pawnshops let me know when its sold and then i delete the backup from my storage drive.

the pawn shop idea is genius! i should google pawn shops around here, see what i can drum up with that though i dont think we have too many. I did get a business meeting type thing through craigs list. person wants to hold a meeting with local busineses about referring each other out. hopefully that turns into something. the home stuff always makes me a little nervous.

oh yeah and i forgot about the guy that tried to pay me with meth. his bill was $230, he tried to hand it over to me and said "you can easily get $400 out of this" i said i'm a pc tech not a drug dealer, if you can get $400 out of it go right ahead and bring me back my $230.

That is why I *never* leave any sort of email on a CL ad - serious clients are going to call you on the phone, scammers will always opt for the email.

I never lower my prices for anyone, though regular clients might get some bonus time out of me once in a while. Certainly never on the first call.

I got a call today from cl and the guy told me my price was too high. Told my wife I could lower the price but that wouldn't be much different than working for free. I just started out in this business and yeah I could use the money but I'm not spending 4 hours on a pc for 20 bucks plus cost of gas to drive to and from. Id end up making about 10 bucks off the whole thing if that.

Generally speaking - 90% of calls from craiglist end up in a service call.

I do not advertise my rates.

I simply put "Reasonable Rates" Which is $65 per hour.

I also - try to help and diagnose or identify the issue over the phone before anything is discussed in terms of Compensation, or fees. They immediately know within the first 2 minutes, I am legit, I know what I am doing. I ask if they want to schedule an appointment, and im done. Very rarely has a customer asked how much it costs.

Tip 1 - dont put your Hourly rate in your ad. Because the guy at $25 per repair will always get the call.

Tip 2 - Avoid business talk. Focus on the customers problem. Even if you fix it over the phone in 5 minutes - They may call back with something else later.

Tip 3 - Do whatever it takes to be on the top of the craigslist computer services section. If you live in a populated area - Then get 10 craigslist accounts. post 3 times a day with each one. Whatever it takes. Dont forget that :)

I think tip 2 is where I went wrong today. I should of at least tried to talk him through the point of getting him booted in safe mode. I'm going to work on focusing on the custmer problem more with calls. Great tips, than you!
