Following the discussions on Technibble I have come to the realization that Craigslist is not a well liked tool. Having restarted my business 3 months ago, by moving to another city - Also having limited Capital. Craigslist was one of the ways I advertised my business. For awhile, it was my only means of Advertising.

The secret to Craigslist is simple... Keep it simple! I have tried to fancy HTML written ad, with graphics, photo, pretty font styles... And neither really work. A Friend of mine who is a plumber (not service plumber btw), made a living off of Craigslist and word of mouth. He led me to the Simple 4 - 6 line advertisement.

My ad looks like this :

★★★ Computer Tech & Geek ★★★

I treat your home like my own.
Honest Help and Support
Over 15 Years of Experience
Reasonable Rates
Virus / Adware removal
Desktop, Laptop, and Networking repair.

Phone: (602) 218-5929

I use it till this day. There are multiple points to this ad. 1 - If they search on craigslist for Computer Repair, Laptop repair, Networking Help, Virus removal, computer virus etc... My ad is always on the top, even if it is 6 hours old. Keywords are crucial.

The other secret - I dont disclose prices. When the customer calls, is my turn to sell. The advertisment is not meant to sell anything. Just call. After 5 minutes with a customer, they know what I am talking about. I can then close the call. About half the time, they dont even ask how much it will cost. They just provide me with there address and time to be there. My rates are not the cheapest. I charge $65/hr. I felt advertising that would drive customers away.

Another Secret. Post throughout the day. In a high traffic area such as Phoenix, AZ - You could post your ad at 7:15am and by 8:00am you are 20 spots down. Asking my customers, there way of picking me - the most common - Was:

1. "I called people going down the list - your the only one that would come to my house"
2. "Your ad was simple, straight to the point"
3. "You seemed knowledgeable on the phone, and appeared genuine"

So, I post my ad every 2 hours. You need to change the first 40 characters of the ad, otherwise you cant post it. Says it appears the same. So i take the bottom two lines, and put them on the top. In reality, people see the first Ad. the 2nd, and if your lucky, the 3rd.

Now that I have made a decent customer base by word-of-mouth and some money on the side, I have been able to expand my marketing into areas that cost actual money. However, my first couple months I did relatively well. I broke the numbers down:

Daily calls from Craigslist - 1.9
Average Value per Call - $72.50
Daily Value: $137.75

The numbers arent fantastic, but for free, 5 minute advertising. It was great. I was able to build my reputation, under-promise and over-deliver and build a loyal customer base.

The best part is, when you meet a customer, who needs more. A website (I program PHP, C#), or you get referred to there boss, for a small company, and you land that contract. Every customer is a big oppurtunity I have learned.

Craigslist fed my family during our move. It was my sole source of income. I shall never discount that value.

Craigslist is only disliked by people that want to blame it for the number of idiot techs that post there. Craigslist itself is not at fault and is a perfectly legitimate way to advertise your business. I used it a LOT when I started out and it got me lots of business.

Cl

My best customers came off CL, my Ad there is also simple, to the point, but with a link to my website, which has a rates listing.

I also sell used towers/desktops so I advertise that too. Just 3 weeks ago a guy that called for a $120 used tower ended up buying 10 from me. He is starting out a business, and his plan was to shop around for those 10 used towers ( he already had screens, keyboards, mice), but when he found me, called and asked if I could come up with 10, and not only he bought the computers, he paid me to delivery and setup his small network.

Excellent advice for those who are just starting out and other also who are looking for more clients.

It's really good of you to provide your positive info and 'how-to' post.:)

I know it's quite popular in the States, but does anyone in the UK have much success with Craigslist?

not used so much here most likely substitute would be gumtree. Might be different in Cambridge but certainly the glasgow listings are full of john wayne techs i would struggle to trust to feed the dog never mind keeping a users data safe & confidential.

ah here an example from your location. personally would love to know how this guy even affords the wokshop in the first place at these prices.

Around here too...

We see a lot of what I assume are college or high school kids posting insanely cheap repair prices. Any customer that I have talked to have commented that prices that low scare them. My thoughts are that a consumer that is OK with using a service priced that low is probably not the type of customer I really want anyway.

Sometimes people that follow the link from craigslist to my website ask me how I survive with my rates being higher than other techs posting on CL, and if I mind that competition.
My answer usually goes along the lines of "I do not mind it, its good for business, sometimes computers need minor repairs, but after one of those guys gets hired to fix the problems, majors repairs are needed, and guess who gets to fix those screw ups?:D

Thank you ...

I appreciate hearing your success story in advertising on CL. Based on the horror stories I've heard, plus my own experiences with spam, I have been scared away. I may give CL another shot.

I don't mind using Craigslist but I don't agree that HTML shouldn't be used. You can still use HTML but make it look like a simple Craigslist listing.

Keep in mind that if you use correct HTML with good SEO, Google will place your Craigslist listing on the first page and sometimes at very top of organic search.

This is very helpful for people that don't search Craigslist but still see your listing in Google.

Thats actually a fantastic point. I may take a nice clean and simple approach through HTML on my ad. The benefits over the one i use, I can track the actual hits to the page. Which would be a blessing.

And yeah, SEO is highly important. Its the only Advertising that matters in our business *exception!!! = Word of mouth*

Thats another thing!!

Best tactic on word of mouth.....

Under promise and Over deliver. Impress, be honest (installing ram is not a $70 job), and in the long run, You will have an impressive list of loyal customers. You can beat a $25/hr High School tech easily.. *dont forget, we all started there... some just are not as honest as others*

well.. at least I started there.. but i didnt do craigslist. I actually had a corporate job! UGH! ACK! NOT CORPORATE :)

• Install of windows XP, Vista, 7 or Linux.

There was one of these guys around the Inverclyde area last year doing a wonderful job.

Any restore partition was wiped and his version of Windows (whatever flavour you liked) installed. It was such a shame that any machine specific drivers were always lost in the process along with any chance the user had of licensed use of any genuine M$ software without spending a lot more than was necessary.

I stopped posting on craigslist for a while, and just recently started again, I get at least 2 calls a week, so for me that's $300-$600 month.

Hi. I wanted to ask for your permission to use your ad on craigslist my self. I'm just starting out again to post ads on craigslist and I can surely use this my self. Please let me know if it's okay, if not I respect that. Thank you!

Many thanks

I followed your advice and I got a call for the first time yesterday and another today
I stopped using it as there were guys that would come out and fix your computer for $30
I guess everybody wants the cheapest price; I am very slow right now so I don’t mind working for less I charge $50 hr.
Most of the jobs I have been doing for the past year are setting up new computers
And with Windows 7 there’s not so many problems, that’s why I think things will slow down
