Hi. I got a client that had this Unmountable Boot Volume Blue Screen at boot.My client got this problem after a power failure. I did chkdsk/r and managed to get the computer to boot, but sometimes when I try to boot(not every time) it hangs on the windows loading screen, so I have to push reset button. And another thing is that there is no problem shutting of the computer but when I try to restart it hangs on shutting down windows.
What I noticed was that the ps2 ports not working (keyboard, mouse) and that sometimes (not always) there is a yellow explanation mark in device manager for the swedish "Diskettstyrenhet". I think it is floppy controller on english, but there is no floppy present. The hd is sata so I did a testinstallation on a ideharddrive but got the same problem.I even replaced the power supply and memory modules just in case (cause you never now) and I upgraded the drivers for the videocard. I think that I have narrowed the problem down and decided to inform my client that probably its a faulty motherboard. I dont think there is so much more I can do rather than replacing the motherboard. What do you think.Am I on the right track ?

You mentioned power failure, these seemingly random faults points at the PSU and motherboard.

Check the motherboard for some bust or expanded bad caps.

Before I replace the mobo I would check the PSU first.

yes I re-read your post and realized that you also replaced the RAM, then there's very little room for doubt that the mobo is shot during power failure.

as of the floppy comment, even though you do not have floppy drive installed. It can still show up because the controller and connector is still on the mobo. I was about to suggest clearing CMOS because of this, but there should not be random exclaimation marks, either it is always there or it is not there.

The power failure could have just damaged some system files I would run SFC.

I would also check for malware.

Hi, don't think that is the problem since I did a clean testinstall on another hd to eliminate that possibility. Or at least tried to, but got the boot and restart problem prior to finishing the install.

If you mean you cloned the hard drive data to another hard drive then you may have just cloned the corrupt system files to the new drive.

Try booting to a live CD to make sure it really is a hardware problem and not software.

Do you see any physical damage on the motherboard?

You might want to recommend a UPS to your client so this will not happen in the future.
