I have never gone from larger to smaller drive so here is the process I came up with which I think might work.

Specifications: 500gb hard drive to 320gb
space used: about 67gb
Win 7

1)make a 100gb partition that contains all the files and OS, leave the rest of the space alone. I will be using the built in computer management software in win 7

2)Use Clonezilla to make an image of the partition

3)Transfer over the partition to the 320gb HD

Seems simple enough but will it actually boot?

Any one try this or something similar?

If you image the disk, NO... If you image the partitions... Probably. If you use something like Microsoft's ImageX that is much better and still free... YES

Most of the cloning software out there (including free) allows you to resize "on the fly" when doing images, even to smaller drives/partitions. As long as the "used space" you will be moving is not larger than the destination drive/partition.
