Choosing a domain?

I have run into a slight snag with my domain information. I wanted to get www.clockwork.com but it is currently unavailable and the owner doesn't want to sell it to me because "I had it before the internet took off."

So what I would like to do is come up with a name for my business that will give me the cleanest domain possible. I could certainly go with www.clockworkpc.net or www.clockworktechnology.whatever, but neither of those really feel... smooth? I guess is the word I'd use. I feel like putting "pc" in the URL makes it seem like we only do PC work, and adding "technology" seems as though it may be a bit intimidating, a long URL, and it doesn't really give a good idea of what we do to the average customer.

The problem I have is that my business is currently registered as Clockwork Technology, LLC. I'm pretty sure I can have a store/business under a different name and keep it registered as Clockwork Technology LLC.

I'm mostly asking for advice here. Do you think my concerns about the domain are viable? Should I just bite the bullet and pick one? Or should I try to come up with a different name to make sure I have a clean, easy, domain address?
 
Well you can see my problem would be that domain is taken, by a company who does very similar work it would seem.

I'm trying to come up with a name that I can brand because I have a heavy focus on custom PCs instead of selling Dell, HP, etc. This is proving to be the most difficult aspect of my business as almost everything I come up with is taken or not quite what I am looking for. My LLC is registered under Clockwork Technology, but from what I understand that doesn't have to be my (for lack of better terminology) brand name.

I hope I never have kids. They will never be named.

Or... I wonder if I trademark Clockwork if that will force him to give up rights to clockwork.com... That is kind of a jerk move though.

No it won't. Just look at why the Nissan car company doesn't own Nissan.com Trademark isn't enough even with globally deep pockets.

Clockwork is a tough name. Not only is it not unique, it's not even computer or technology oriented. Is it related somehow to your given name?
 
If you trademark that doesn't mean he is force to give it to you but instead he now can't use the domain in the same trade as yourself to confuse consumers. If you were a big company with a large consumer base the best it will do is make the domain worthless to anyone but you or risk infringement, leaving him the only option to sell but even then that's tough. Though he could still just chose not to sell. :D

Not really. I picked it because of the saying "like clockwork" because it suggests that we are precise, on time, and our stuff always works.

That's what I suspected. So you've chosen a very common phrase quite late in the domain name reservation game. No surprise that it's tough to find an unused variation.

I figured as much. What I will probably do is check with my lawyer and see if I'm able to have Clockwork Technology LLC my sort of catch all business name, and have my IT business under a different name. I'm almost positive I am able to do this but I don't recall all of the specifics.

That could benefit me down the road because I want to have a custom PC shop that may operate under a different name than what I choose for my repair shop.

I had considered an alternate spelling but I don't want our customers to think we can't spell. I'm not sure how legitimate of a concern that really is.

After doing a bit of research, it would seem that I can file for a DBA (doing business as) name and open my shop as that. Which is fine with me. However... now I have to think of a name for that and I'm always stumped. Can anybody offer some suggestions?

I've got www.uptechnologysolutions.com for the official site, then I have short Print and Radio Friendly URL of www.upitpro.com that 301 redirects. This way, on my business cards, radio ads, etc it's A LOT easier to remember and type. I wanted mqtpc.com but that was already taken.

I know there's an SEO advantage if you have computer and repair in your domain name, but for an outfit like mine I don't want to have my multi-facted company using a one-sided domain name.

Go with a name that's easy to spell/use/seo-worthy/etc. Take the extra time to think one up. Yes, it's only $7-$12 per name but when you go through the effort to design your website and submit it to search engines for indexing if you later change the domain name it could be quite some time to recoup pagerank etc.
