Charging for un-doing your own work...

I dont know about the OP, but here I offer Kabuto and AV for roughly the same cost, $99/yr. And its NOT refundable. Cancel within that year, you'll get no money back from me. And if you want me to come and uninstall everything, its a service call and will be charged as such.

Normally I would agree with this but the OP's client sounds like he would be trouble and he set up the situation by not having a firm rule in place before the man got upset. This kind of thing can get you eaten alive on yelp or google.

I'd remove it for free, but add to your agreement that if they cancel in a year, no refunds and you charge XXX for removal. Learn on this one and I doubt you will need to even use your disclaimer, but you will have it :)

I almost never get refund requests, but I sell a lot of prepay and on occasion someone will have buyers remorse. I email back "well, next time you have that "quick question" it will be $139 even for 5 min" that changes their mind.

I installed a 1U Dell server with vertical wallmounts in an office for a client early last year. They don't have a proper MDF/IT room, so this open space on a wall was the only location for the server. I had it pointed with the PSU downwards, mainly due to keeping wires neat, easier to see lights, hotswappable harddrives, and powerswitch. Room it is mounted in has a AC unit so temps don't fluctuate or get high. iDRAC hasn't reported any high temp issues. 2 Weeks ago the client contacts me asking me to flip the server around, so the PSU is pointing upwards. I push back saying the server is fine the way it is, there have been no temp issues in over a year, and I have other clients setup this way without any issue. They insist I flip the server around at my cost due to concerns of overheating. I cave and do as they told me to. Of course, while doing the work, I accidentally knock off the external backup harddrive onto the floor and it's dead. So I'm out labor and the cost of a harddrive, for no real reason. Trying not to let this bother me, but it does.

Smile, be polite to the client and add $20 to every job from now on till it's covered!;):D

Then fire him - very clearly. Use four letter words.

No, that's a good way to land 1 star Google reviews. Better to passive-aggressively humiliate him while being as sweet as pie.

E.G. "Well sir, we cater our services to those who are willing to pay a bit more for value and quality. Since you're obviously not looking for that perhaps you'd be happier using another service down the road. Good day!"

Might seem odd to some but I'd rather 1 star reviews than bending over to get f*****. I understand the other point of view, it just doesn't work for me.

We have enough 5 star reviews that the occasional 1 stars don't bother me much. Generally, it's pretty clear the person was a moron and we get lots of customers who come in after having read them and had a good laugh.

He actually never called back ... which kind of surprised me

Oh he'll call back.... in 6 months and still want a full refund. And when you tell him you won't refund him he'll claim that it's your fault you didn't remove it sooner. Believe me, I know the type.

In any case, like many others have said, I'd tell him that I'd remove it for him at no charge and, if you really feel like throwing him a bone (I wouldn't) prorate the year and refund him the remainder. But very clearly state that you will not install the A/V of his choice for no charge. That's billable time and he's high as a kite if he thinks you should do that for free. Before doing any of that though I'd make sure to pitch him one more time and really focus on the monitoring aspect and the ability for his wife to not need to worry about having to deal with infection. If his 'Two Buck Chuck' product catches something great, what did it do with it and did it actually resolve the whole issue?

There are many times I'd like to write out my invoice like this;

1) Few mouse clicks, watch the magic program install it's self, tweak here and there, listen to some ambient space music streams in the background, read The Drudge Report between mouse clicks: (no charge, its like soothing therapy to me)

2) Client wasting my time over the phone with ignorant logic based on nothing, in the face of 30+ years of computer experience, blood pressure rising: (250.00 dollars, non refundable!)

3) Total 250.00

4) Have a nice day!
