[SOLVED] Catalina won't allow to change password

Running out of options here. Did you try an SMC reset? If that fails boot into recovery mode do a re-install to refresh things. After making sure you have some good TM restore points of course.
I tried clicking on the ? next to her user password box and clicked to reset with android ID and it went directly to the dreaded black screen with the circle and slash through it.

Sounds like there is a corruption/hardware issue. You mentioned it went through an update. Are there anymore outstanding?

Just the monterey upgrade. The update to Monterey failed previously, but it might have because I turned off wifi before the reboot, didn't know it was happening. This is so weird, if this was a pc I'd say virus. Everything seems to work fine, but somethings screwed with permissions. I'll try and get her apple ID & password if the reload doesn't work

I already ran the repair tool in disk utility, everything clean. Also read where screentime can mess with accts, hers was on so i turned it off, didn't help. Could it have anything to do with the drive being encrypted?

More likely just a botched update. Mac is as complicated as any OS. They sometimes go south. Especially if they have had multiple updates for several years.
yeah, I think my last two options are trying her apple ID, and a osx reinstall.

Have you tried calling Apple support? The first tech you talk to will probably be a waste of time, but once you get bumped to the next level they're pretty good.

Got one user that we couldn't get an update to install. Tried twice and both times it hosed the system and we had to do a TM restore. But he's going to have to do something soon. They're getting moved over to Sharepoint and the SP client needs a recent version OS to work properly.

Edit: almost forgot. since you're getting close to the end of options you might want to give Onyx a try.

FINALLY got it figured out! It was the file vault encryption, all I had to do was log into her account and turn off file vault. Then created a new admin acct. Rebooted to recovery did resetpassword from terminal then selected the new admin acct to reset her account password. worked.:)

Still wonder if you have a corruption of some sort in the home directory of that user. Filevault2 should be able to change the password without issue. You shouldn't have to disable it. Unless this was running the legacy Filevault version 1 that only encrypts the home directory.

Originally when I went into recovery and I tried to do a reinstall it said the drive was encrypted and had to be unclocked to do anything to it. Is that the legacy version? Also there were 2 admin accounts, I deleted her husbands I presume his was encrypted too so maybe unlocking hers after the deletion did it.

No that is version 2. There is a master password? Were you perhaps mistaking the FileVault master prompt for the end user? I don't think the master key for the vault can be changed. You have to decrypt and re-encrypt the vault to change it.

I wasn't looking to change the file vault password just the user. All it said in the settings (logged into her account) under security and file vault is to unlock you need user password OR file vault password, I just used her existing password and it decrypted it
