I got a call from a crazy guy today I need to look up info on some computers. I tried to know what the maximum memory size is on a Gateway 500S LTD. According to some sites it takes 3 GB. That seems rather large for SD RAM.

I tried navigating the maze that is Gateway's site but found no detailed information like the max memory size. Can someone point me to a place or tell me how to reliably look for this kind of information in the future? Thanks a bunch.

My preferred method is to go to crucial.com. If you are connected via the machine you are working on you can just hit "scan my system"; failing that, you can look it up by model.

I like using that CPUZ program, it will tell you how much in each slot you can put in there, along with speed of ram, make and manufactuer, etc.

Crucial's online application will do the job in most cases, but I agree with xxsilk109xx recommendation about the CPUZ program. It provides a great deal of information, including information on existing installed memory, as well.

I've had CPUz misreporting stuff. Mainly with laptop where it sometimes reports 4 slots... So if opening the case is not an option, I would try both CPUz and Crucial.com

CPUz won't tell the max though but it will tell what's already there which is very useful if somebody wants an quote onsite...
