Calling on Hacker Trackers

Cool.... I'm glad you got law enforcement involved. I guess the conclusion I jumped to was that you were going to go after him yourself.

No problem, I took his threat personally, and would like five minutes with him alone but, I wouldn't screw up all my hard work tracking him down by doing something stupid.

heres a thought.... STAY OFF OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES. they are just bad news all the way around. I do not feel sorry for those that fall prey to trolls on social networking sites. Cammon man your in the IT business you know that people are going to target these sites more then ANY OTHER. Do yourself a favor and do not try and be "internet police"

Sorry I ****** in your cheerios dude! I'm doing this to help out some friends. Didn't mean to upset you! Take a deep breath, it's going to be alright.
Yes I'm a tech and I'm fully aware of the dangers of the internet. Not sure how my post got you bent out of shape. If it was a normal customer I would probably feel somewhat like you about not feeling sorry for them, but it was friends. I guess they looked to me for advise and help (maybe cause I'm a tech) so I helped them. I'm not the damn internet police and don't have time or care what most people do online. Please accept my apology for posting I mean pissing in your cheerios.

So yet again the bad guys win?

Lets set some law that enable officials to monitor everyone on the Internet and everything everyone does because less then 1% of 1% of internet users are ****-heads.

How about we not get scared, and how about may be we fight back for a change without throwing away what we are ACTUALLY ARE FIGHTING FOR namely the freedom to use a social site or whatever we feel like without someone scaring us back into a black hole!

I don't know where some of you get your information or theories from. If you give up that easy you'll never succeed.

I was/am just trying to save you some headache and let you know what to expect, since my information and theories come directly from experience in these matters. I thought that the purpose of this thread was a appeal for help, sorry if I misjudged.

For someone who is not versed in evidence law you can quickly do the wrong thing and trash the whole case(if you are not brought up on charges yourself), if illegal procedures were taken.
Trust me...the best intentions can very easily backfire on you. Playing the hero is nice, just not the blind rage hero.

I hope that your friend at the ISP did not provide you with information on him, elsewise he is going to be in a pot if the right people find out.

Either way if it goes to court..some friendly advice:
make sure you have all the answers to the questions that will be asked of you(experience, way you obtained, etc), ready to answer because 99% of the time, everything is tightly scrutinized. Although you might get lucky, and it might not even touch that, guy might have a dumb lawyer, or he might plead out.

@ Kenhelms

  1. I think you misunderstood me. I was asking for help and I appreciate your help.
  2. I'm not a lawyer but, I have learned enough in the past 15 years in this career to have somewhat of a clue as what is legal or illegal.
  3. All steps in the process were legal ( why wouldn't they be ). What makes you think someone has to be a hacker to catch a hacker. That kind of thinking was what got him caught.
  4. The ISP couldn't and wouldn't provide me with any info other than letting me know that they traced the ip, that it is was valid, and they had the customers logs and info ready when the warrant gets there.
  5. If it goes to court or if it doesn't go to court, I could care less. It's up to my friend to decide if they want to press charges. I'm happy as long as he get a lesson out of it.
  6. My hands are clean and my job is done. Feels good too!

O no, I didnt mean to imply the hacker game to catch one, My only concern was the way the IP owners info was obtained, but that doesnt seem to be a issue based on your last post ;)

That kind of feeling is really something in and of itself isnt it?

@ Kenhelms

Glad we're cool then. I don't mind someone getting mad at me, I just don't want it to be over a misunderstanding.

To everyone:

Thanks for the help and advice with this. I will warn all my friends for the millionth time to be careful online, use good strong passwords, watch what you click on and download. This was very exhausting but interesting. I actually learned a few things to do for better protection.

Whoa dude, thats pretty impressive... good on you for not giving up, I really didn't think the police would be much help. Where I live (Australia) we are somewhat backwards, I actually know the head of cyber crime in my area and chances are they wouldn't have done anything.

Spose I owe you a beer since you proved me wrong.

also, lol @ the guy not using a proxy or something of the sort, some "hacker" hey :p

I agree he was dumb. That's why I figured he wasn't a real hacker or a very good one. He just seemed like he knew way more than he could have gathered from info online. This is only the second one I have caught in 15 years and only the second one I went after. I hope I never have to or need to do it again but, like Billy Currington says - God is great, Beer is good and people are crazy!

Yeah, sorry for the delay. I been busy with the hiring of a new tech.

The so called hacker turned out to be an old friend of the son. He apparently had the son's facebook info for a while and had been reading his emails and info. I guess something happened one day and he decided to take things one step further. Anyway because of his age there's not much the law could do but send him to DOJJ for thirty days. This kid seems to have been in a lot of trouble through the years. I don't currently know what the outcome will be but, I will keep everyone informed.
