Got sick of being under desk and trying to get HDMI, USB cables onto desktop from underneath. So I had some HDD magnets around so attached them to cable and grappled away :)

Worked well with some weight on it - no more swearing under the desk.

Yes all well and good, though this was just a MacGyver type of thing - using spare parts for creative uses.

You are mistaking the purpose of this post and where it is posted. I made and used this for myself really - not for professional use.

When I first started doing POS work I jury-rigged a tool using the rods out of a gun cleaning kit with a piece of a coat hanger for a hook on the end. It had some limitations but got me through at the time.

gun cleaning kit
I love how that's considered to be a perfectly normal household item in the US ... Like, "What can I use to fish this cable through this desk ... hmmm, I know, my gun cleaning kit!". "Hmmm, now I need a bigger hole in the desk .... Where's my gun!" :D

Just buying a 'gun cleaning kit' in the UK would probably be enough to find yourself woken by the sound of the fuzz breaking down your door at 5am.

And it boggles my mind that anyone would want to live in a society like that.
It's what you get used to I guess.

I personally wouldn't want to own a gun if it meant that every crazy person and his dog could own a gun too. BUT, if I lived somewhere where every crazy person and his dog could own a gun then, yeah, gimme a freakin' gun!

It's all about perspective, a bit like the whole 'smoking in public places' thing. At the time, smoke-filled bars and workplaces seemed quite normal and acceptable. And even as a non-smoker myself, the thought of banning people from smoking in public places seemed like an over-reach and an infringement of civil liberties. But now, looking back with hindsight, it seems crazy that it was ever considered acceptable to fill rooms with (potentially carcinogenic) smoke where other people work or socialise.

From a UK perspective, the thought of allowing anyone who wants a gun to own one seems absolutely mental. I would say that at least 80% of the people I meet shouldn't be allowed to own a gun, because they're either emotionally unstable, irrational or just plain stupid. Now, on the other hand, if most of those people owned guns, I'd certainly want to own one too.

This ^^
I couldn't live in a society where everyone was allowed to own a firearm.
Three big cheers to ex PM John Howard for having the balls to say enough is enough and banning gun ownership in Australia after the Port Arthur Massacre.
We don't need guns. We need a peaceful safe and secure society and I'm quite comfortable knowing that law enforcement have them and can use them when justified.

crazy person
The problem isn't crazy people. It's criminals. When a violent criminal breaks into your house late at night with a gun intent on killing you, you'd better have a gun too otherwise you're gonna wind up dead. If they made guns illegal, criminals would still get them. Criminals don't obey the law.

I don't like guns and if we could somehow snap our fingers and destroy every gun on the planet (and erase all knowledge of how to make a gun), I would be in full support of that. But making guns illegal will only disarm law abiding citizens and make them easy pickings for the criminals.

It's the same thing as illegal drugs. Yes, no law abiding citizen has illegal drugs because they're illegal, but all the criminals still have access to drugs.

Then of course add the fact that you need guns in order to rebel against a tyrannical government and banning guns is a terrible idea.

Totally agree. But, with proper gun control and severe penalties for anyone caught owning/using a gun illegally, that almost never happens. In the UK, gun crime is very rare. Burglars and petty criminals over here don't usually carry guns and most gun crimes involve drug gangs or vast amounts of money. And I think those gun crimes could be minimised too with even stiffer penalties and tighter gun control (or, 'bullet control' maybe? ... since it's easier to acquire the materials to make a gun than it is to make a bullet).

I understand what you're saying though, and it's easy to talk about gun ownership/crime in a country where gun ownership is not the norm. Closing Pandora's box in a country like the US is an almost impossible task, one that would require a huge coordinated effort to ensure its citizens remained as safe as possible.

Well, there are non-violent ways to rebel against and overthrow corrupt and tyrannical governments, especially in this technological age. In case you haven't heard, there's a growing 'silent protest' in the shape of cryptocurrencies (like Bitcoin). Take away a government's control of money and you take away its power.

Anyway, I digress. Apologies for derailing the thread. Back to cable management ideas! :D

I LOL'd. Our politicians can't even agree to emergency stimulus without throwing a bunch of political BS into it, holding this much needed stimulus for the people hostage in their attempts to pass funding for absolute BS that has nothing to do with it. I guarantee you if they made gun ownership illegal, gun deaths would go up 10x overnight because they wouldn't pass anything to protect the law abiding people from the criminals.

Just dropping in to back this up with some numbers.

UK 2018-19 Figures:
Total non-air firearm offences: 6,759
- Resulting in serious injury: 283
- Resulting in Death: 31

Obtaining a gun is just not worth the risk for most low-level criminals. You can do 14 years jail time just for possession. Use that gun for a crime, even without firing it, and you could be looking at a life sentence.

However, I agree it's not a good idea for USA to implement a ban right now. A flat "guns are banned" law would cause absolute mayhem. Maybe a long, slow phased approach over the course of 10+ years would stand a chance. But you know half way through the process someone new would get elected and tear the thing apart.

Grabs popcorn. Anyone want to start a pool on how long this thread goes before it is locked? :D

Well, until it does, rationality and data versus ideology and belief is always perversely entertaining to watch. And that's even with cultural differences factored in!

So, er... why haven't you?
Too many people are far too comfortable with their Netflix subscriptions and their ability to complain on social media, both of which make their life a little more bearable while allowing them an outlet to vent and a way for them to see that other people are suffering too. Misery loves company. Things have to get far worse before people are willing to risk their lives challenging the government through armed conflict. We have far too many creature comforts and distractions these days. I don't think there's going to be armed rebellion until people are literally starving in the streets. A little bit of their freedom chipped away each year is a small price to pay in exchange for their life.
