As in Build Your Own Device. Saw this video on WSJ about how things have changed dramatically in China. The Shenzhen area, the core of this market, is so well developed you can build your own phone. Alibaba, the Chinese version of Amazon, has multiple listings for build your own brand phone. And with some the minimum order is 1.

Chinese manufacturing is very capable recently in the knife industry there are Chinese makers putting out products for $100-$200 the compete with USA made knives that run $200-$400. You can still find the standard cheap Chinese garbage but they are fully capable of making things to compete with the higher priced companies. While I still might hesitate to buy Chinese products, fear of supporting bad labor practices, I do believe that their efforts to produce budget friendly options is great as it will hopefully create a push for the current companies to find ways to reduce their costs and their prices.
