What do you guys think :
Am I am better using my name in the name of my business or am I better going for a name that doesn't have my own name in it.
I currently have my name in use but someone suggested to me it was not a good idea and that has started me thinking, so I thought I would ask what you guys thoughts were ?

Do you mean like "Joe's Computer Repair"?

Pro: Some people think it's a personal touch and that attracts some customers.
Con: Some people think it's less professional and that deters some customers.

There's not really a right or wrong answer but, consider this, if you end up being successful and decide to sell off your business, it might be harder to sell a business with your own name on it than one that's more generic.

Yes that's correct joes computer repairs lol

Ok I do see both sides and that was the exact reason the other person gave for not calling it using my name might be difficult to sell if I wanted to.

Thanks I think I need to have a good think about this one, I am rubbish at thinking up names

A name like "Geek Force" (Steve C's old repair business) is catchy to be sure. It sounds hi-tech, more than a personal name does. (Unless you have a hi-tech name, that is!) ;)

I use my last name in my business, simply because I am somewhat thrifty & do not want to spend the outrageous fees that my state charges for a fictitious name and the process you have to go through.

I felt that money could be better spent elsewhere. that being said, I agree with what Xander posted in regards to pros/cons.

I would probably use a fictitious/catchy sounding name if I didn't have to pay all the fees associated with it.

YMMV
