Bsod on new os install

Memory tests are sufficient if you use the right tools and you test them for long enough. However, swapping out memory is quicker. Just keep in mind that if you swap out the memory and it is still failing, then you have to test the memory slots.

Yes I've has a slot fail.

What are the chances of both failing because I've tried both sticks in both slots by themselves with no luck. It's possible I'm sure but just letting you know what I've tried. Unfortunately no one sells ddr2 around here for less than $50 and I could probably get them both for that online or close to it but then I play a waiting game for a week or two.

If it has to be done it has to be done but I'd just like to be sure first if possible. Thanks again

Just run the Memtest86+ test over night and get back to us in the morning. Right now, all we can do is speculate.

Ok been running for 2 and a half hours now so surely by morning it'll show something. I'll post back tomorrow.

After 15 hours and 20 mins and 10 passes it still states no errors. I have to meet with a customer this morning so I'm just gonna let it keep going until I get back and think of something else to try

I've been trying to run Linux mint from a DVD but I've not been having any luck getting it running. I get to a page resembling command prompt that reads * stopping system v runlevel compatibility at the top and it freezes. The one time I got passed this is just rebooted itself abruptly

Just got a new Bsod about pci.sys. The computer shut down before I could get any more info though.

If RAM is testing good, motherboard seems in good shape (that is it will boot), BIOS settings have been reset to default, and all peripherals (including USB devices and Headers) have been removed, then you might as well swap the proc cause that's about all that's left...

when you tried to boot linux, did you have the HDD plugged in? try without it and without opticals (aka boot from a usb optical or thumb drive)...

Trying now without hdd but my first run already failed cause it's still hanging up on the compaq screen. Oh and now it's stopping on the loading Casper screen after it says ready.

It won't do USB it freezes the computer (there's actually an upgrade specifically for that I just haven't been able to install it) so I unplugged them all. I did put both ram sticks back in because I never saw any difference in swapping sticks and slots. I unplugged the cd drive (because it's Sata and I thought it might need a driver) and booted with the hdd and it didn't show any difference either.

Other than replacing the processor like you said I really don't know what else to try. If the ram slots themselves were both bad would it show up on memtest86+?

Just thought you meant in bios because I've already stated that I don't make it to windows half the time before it hangs up and when I do I don't have time to do anything before it freezes completely, shuts down, or presents a bsod. Safe mode is the same way.

Huh, disable it by pressing F8 during boot and eliminate the option to automatically reboot on error (or whatever).

Yes, if the slots were failing, then it would show that the memory failed in memtest86+

Huh? Whuh? Why would you expect to change a Windows' setting in the BIOS?

Sorry but this is Tech 101 stuff here. I'm afraid you might be in over your head.

. . . . .

You really need to get something that can test the motherboard and cpu

I finally got linux to load up and I went and loaded up some YouTube videos to run and it didn't give me a problem. I left it running while I went on an errand and came back to it still running but Firefox had crashed. I started firefox back up and got an error screen saying
stopping save kernel messages
Virtualbox additions disabled not in a virtual machine
Starting Bluetooth

Pulseaudio configured for per-user sessions. saned disabled: edit /etc/default/saned

I've never really used Linux before so I'm not sure what that means. When I clicked the mouse it went away though and went back to Firefox. Does this mean that it IS related to a driver/firmware problem?

Got a new BSOD: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00EC0108, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8747D533)
CLASSPNP.SYS - Address 8747d533 base at 87478000

There is a video driver that I haven't been able to install because it says it doesn't meet the minimum requirements, although it's for this computer and for Win 7 x64. Other than that I have found no drivers missing.
