Hi All, I need some advice on a laptop (running windows vista) that has multiple BSOD issues. First of all the laptop is very very unstable and wont even run for long in safe mode so making any kind of repair is a problem, I did think the bsod issues were relating to a possible bad ram but i ran mem tester and it came back.

i did some research on the BSOD issues and it seems to be registry corruption problems.

Please see the photos

as you can see there are multiple bsod messages, I cant exactly fix it because of the problems that it will randomly display so i advised the customer that I would probably have to back up there work and photos e.t.c and reinstall vista.

I need to get a cable that will allow me to connect the laptop hard drive to my computer so i can copy stuff onto my external drive for them.

I thought i would check with you guys to see if there something less drastic i can try though.

thanks all :)

Anytime I have an unstable system I look for an overheating problem first, is the heat sink plugged with crap, is the fan operating, is something obstructing the air intake or outtake. Then I boot off the ubcd4win cd and run a Memtest86 from the boot menu. If the memory passes I reboot off the ubcd4win cd open a command window and run chkdsk /f.

If the above doesn't correct the problem I'll remove the drive and perform a full backup followed by a virus scan, reinstall the drive and perform a repair, or as a last resort a clean install.

I agree with WareDat, check for thermal issues and also boot under a alternative environment like UBCD or BartPE. We will usually boot under BartPE and play with the machine for a few minutes to see if it is stable under that. If it blue screens under the alt env then its not likely to be the original O/S that is the issue. However if you are accessing the hard drive and it blue screens it could be the HD. But do the heat and alt env checking, it eliminates a few big questions.

ps- Be sure you are using memtest86+, not memtest86. You would be surprised how often the old memtest86 will not find errors.

I ran it in ubcd but no memory issues show up, its also not overheating aswell. i guess i will go ahead with the format then since i cannot repair it in safemode at all.

thanks for your replies :)

If you can boot up in safe mode, have you checked the logs to see what errors you're getting?

  1. Right-click on "My Computer".
  2. Choose "manage".
  3. Click "+" next to "Event Viewer".
  4. Look in the different lists for Red circles with white X's in them.
  5. Double Click on X's and check what the description says.
  6. Google it or post it here.
  7. Smile, everything will be ok! :D

lol :p unfortunely safe mode wasn't very stable for me to enter event viewer but thanks to google the bsod error codes told me its a bunch of registry problems but i cannot repair them as its just too unstable, i've ordered an adaptor for 2.5 connections so i can back up there work and do a complete format and reinstall.

here is what i've ordered as suggested by simmy ages ago http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143274#

WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! Do your registry entries from another OS and it should be stable.

Before you wide the system, have you tried running the UBCD4Win disc to perform the registry edits? It's easy. Create a UBCD4Win boot CD (the hardest part), boot into it (a windows interface on a CD), Start > Registry Tools > Regedit.

I wouldn't know which parts of the registry are messed up to even do that though. :(
