Anyone know how to boot an older computer from a USB if the bios does not support "boot from USB" ? Trying to use my Zalman to load an ISO file for installing windows...

With a Zalman your not trying to boot from the usb, your booting from a cd rom. Can you boot from the virtual cd rom in the bio's?

Use PLOP. Burn the ISO to a CD and then boot with that disc. The burned disc will let you then pass control over to the USB.

OOPS, forgot to mention - older sony laptop and CD/DVD is not working. Tried everything I can think of and so far - no luck!

Depending on the OS, you can set up windows 7 or windows 8 to install from a usb thumb drive. There are many guides online for how to do it.
The problem is your motherboard doesn't natively support booting from USB and your optical drive is dead. If it werent dead then:
A) You wouldn't need to do any of this, you would just use the CD/DVD
B) You could use something like Hirens or a similar tool that will allow you to boot from USB on a machine that doesn't natively support that.
In this case, I think the best bet is to get a replacement CD/DVD drive. Not sure using an external CD/DVD will work, don't know if the system will see it as a USB device or a DVD drive.

Your pc should see the Zalman as a cd-rom if you start it in that mode.

I was getting ready to dig out my old Zip drive to play with, then I thought, "Whats a parallel port?"
But its a good idea because the OP's old laptop probably has one.
