Blue screen

Only ever had defragging cause problems once, when norton go back was installed, and never really bothered with defrag after that. Link posted above was quite good in various things to do but if you're unable to get it booting from usb/cd or mount it you're going to struggle.

Sounds like his problems began when using Defraggler. About half of the time that I tried Defraggler from a UBCD boot, it corrupted the system drive so I quit using it.

Half the time? Really? I've used defraggler on dozens of computers with no problems. Incidentally I prefer JKdefrag, but defragler I like second best. As for the PC in questions. 10 years? Have them get a 3-4 year old computer used for 150 or less. Hell, you can get a POS new one for 300. Then add the drive from the first PC to the second and copy over files. Just make sure you have an IDE to SATA adapter if necessary.
