Bank account was hacked

The gas station skimmers are not installed separate, but installed inside the pumps own reader. The thieves literally open up the card reader and put the device inside along with the original hardware. It's literally impossible to see it, and the only indication would be a voided warranty sticker, if there was even one there to begin with.

Here are a few pix for those who think they are savvy enough to detect a CC Skimmer.

Chances are either the places you are using your card are hacked or have a rogue card reader installed.
We don't have this problem in Canada they all have chips, no chip no transaction funny the US is so far behind rest of the world for CC and debit card security.

Not at banks, but some of the US-based big box stores like Home Depot (or was it Lowes?) don't yet have chip-reading readers at the self-checkout. I forget whether the regular check-out does or not.

Well now a lot of the new cards are also proximity cards. No pin needed "tap and go". Potentially someone with a powerful enough scanner could scan your card from your pocket (or so I've heard)

atlanticjim,

Great pics. I will definitely be sure to thoroughly look over what I insert my card into next time!

The scanner slot on our fuel pumps that I use is flush mounted on the pumps - it is simply a slot cut right in the face of the pump body with small guiding tabs for the card.

I think it would be difficult to attach anything to it that wouldn't be painfully obvious...but I don't know for sure. The ATM keypad cover is pretty slick, and also the camera mounted up top.

I've heard this awhile back as well. So I suppose we should purchase a metal lined credit card case to carry them in for security against being proximity scanned.

A chip in the card sounds like a good idea. I thought that technology was underway here in the states...no?

This has happened to me twice before, years apart but unfortunately around the holidays. i stopped using debit so much and stuck with credit. It does happen but I have been fortunate to have Chase bank stand behind me and quickly resolve the issues.
