I have a customer that I am building a computer for. She told me that someone told her of a program called Ghostwriter, and this program backs up data automatically whenever you save something, i guess kind of like a running backup or something.

I tried looking for this and come up with nothing. I want to recommend something to her, I was thinking acronis. Not sure, though, if Acronis does this or not.

Looking for something that can back up data on the fly, or daily or something, but automatically onto a usb hard drive.

Thanks for some good recommendations, i know there are a bunch out there, just wanting to put some feelers out there on what you all use. Thanks!

Are you running Windows 7 on this machine you are building for her? If so, why not just use the built in backup utility. It works great! Nothing like XP backup. I have used this on dozens of WIN7 machines and have not had a problem. One great thing about the windows backup is that if the usb hdd gets full, the utility will automatically overwrite the OLDEST files and start over again.

Yes it will run win7 home premium, will this version do that? I thought it was just professional, but if so, i might just go with professional because the cost of the software will be the difference in price anyway.

I installed 7HP on my father's puter....set it to back up every Sunday. Went to Wal-Mart and got him a Seagate 250gig external USB harddrive for $53 for the backup. it's plug and play, and you can carry it in your pocket...great to have.

works like a charm.

Thats one of the biggest gripes I have had against windows. At least with Linux one version does everything.

If they didn't introduce crippleware how could they milk you for all you're worth? Same issue with getting a windows server, and licenses for other licensed windows machines to simply use it as a file/print server. Disgusting.

Well when your software runs on like 90% of the world computers, guess you can do anything you want . lol....

I think this software will suit you

Wondershare Time Shuttle is all-round system restore, drive data recovery and file recovery software. With the help of up to 1,000 restore points (snapshots) you created, you can repudiate what you have restored and go back, and recover files quite easily; it's able to do individual file recovery without restore the whole computer like other software does. In a word, Time Shuttle helps restore system, remove PC problems and prevent data loss.

Sounds like she's wanting some kind of Continuous Data Protection (CDP) where data/changes are backed up immediately on the fly.

I have a couple of customers that wanted this too and ended up installing Memeo Premium Backup and it's worked well for them ever since...

One little note with Memeo Premium - if you want to schedule backups in addition to the CDP - you'll need the Professional version. This can be helpful if you need to backup something like a shared multi-user QuickBooks files where CDP can cause issues....

My preference for periodic backup is Casper (additional income avenue), cloning to an identical external drive, or bigger. While not backing-up on the fly, I like the benefit of being able to drop the backup in if the working drive dies with little down time. Of course you still have to adjust for any gap between back-up and failure.

For on the fly back-up, I have just begun experimenting with RAID 1 (mirror) and am pleased with what I see (using this with CCTV/DVR systems).
