AVG has finally released version 9 of their antivirus software which they calm is faster and much robust when compared with it’s predecessors. Grisoft, the company behind AVG assert that scanning speed has been increased by 50%, while the boot time has been increased by 10-15%.

imageThey also say that the memory usage has been reduced considerably, technically it takes less system resources. One of the important changes is Identity Theft. AVG now works with a service called Identity Guard which integrates in your Internet Explorer and Firefox browser toolbar.

Free version to come soon ! Sounds promising though, I might have to give it a whirl. Also Avast 5 Free is coming soon too .

Which one will be better ? I'm more leaning on Avast, but if AVG's improvements are accurate then that might top the icing on the cake ..

I'm using Avira at the moment. We'll see what does AVG9 looks like then.

Yeah, it's definitely sweet.

For a free antivirus for my customers i would choose avast over avg any day. you can not beat avast for protection, but the thing it let it down was the silly interface, cant wait for avast 5

Changing the skins made it (Avast) a world better although Avira still gets my vote...AVG though did add an additional feature I noticed I think sometime earlier this year that is interesting but I still don't see myself finding a way to actually like AVG even with that added feature set. (Called LinkScanner)

This is definitely a plus especially for those "click happy" computer users.

I think AVG Free is all about trying to get you to buy the full product. EG, the banner accross the bottom of the app every time you open it, and the ability not to remove rootkits (something essential nowadays). With avast, I always felt like once you've signed up, they recognise you don't want to pay and stop bugging you. I also like the features avast brings, such as the funky boot-time scanner, rootkit detection based not on signatures (hidden file detection), and the spam filter thing (alerts you when a certain number of emails are sent in a certain period of time). Avast is also a nice quick scanner, whereas AVG is hardly quick...

I was an AVG fan till the days of AVG 8, then I switched to Avast. I really hope AVG pulls something out of the hat here and impress's me because I would love to can Avast.

Not to mention being a reseller for AVG and not even recommending it to my customers (due to the fact it has been horrible lately) is bad for business :p.

How come you want to can Avast? Bad experience?

I didnt start using AVG until version 7.0. 7.5 was great, 8.0 was eh..., 8.5 is trash. So I tried 9.0. It isnt any faster, it can require a reboot on INSTALL, and now instead of having the rootkin scanner built into the regular scanner, now they are two different scans. Overall my thoughts are the same as AVG 8.5, trash. Which is to bad. Well AntiVir and MSE is still my choice.

Since we have a good group wishing to test MSE, I'd like to know if anyone has tried running MSE and Avira Antivir simultaneously and if so how that worked out...I hate seeing two av apps running but curious if just maybe MS made theirs friendly as Avira is light on resources and may not be bothered with it...hmmm
