AVG 9.0 Free

I wouldn't mind knowing how it works myself... stopped using AVG years ago as it kept slowing my machine down and missing stuff.

I am however using Avast! 5 and so far I like it. If you were a fan of avast before 5 - I hope you did not like the skins - because they no longer support skins.

It is a lot more advanced in my opinion than 4.6 and it seems to boot a lot faster and use a lot less resources.

I still like AVG although many here will say that it is bloated.
Noted changes in the 9.0:

Upon setup there is an Optimization Scan which identifies "trusted files" that will be excluded from scan in the future. That should speed up the scans that were SLOW in 8.5. This scan took 15 minutes on an old P4 machine with 50GB of HD to scan. When it does a full scan overnight, I will post how long it took.

There is a "gaming mode" highly touted upon the setup, which is supposed to suppress interruptions when in gaming.

Icons changed (who really cares).

I have to say that for my residential clients I do like the link scanner which flags possible risky links.

When I hear AVG, I think repeat (& not so happy) client...but Jim, your information I appreciate because it sounds as if they have made some improvements, now depending on their detection capabilities perhaps they'll become a viable option once again.

Alright, here is my experience so far.

The box I was testing it on was running Avast prior too. The Avast program was running around 40k memory usage when it was NOT scanning, and went as high as 90k when it was scanning. As far as the specs it is a PENT 4 2.67ghz, 2 gigs ram, Windows XP.

I downloaded and installed AVG 2 times. During the first installation it gave me an error and completely shutdown the installation. No error code or description, nothing in the event logs, so not sure what happened there. The second time it did successfully install. It took about 6 minutes to install the entire program (I enabled all the add-on's).

The program itself is running a lot lighter, when it is just sitting idle it is running at 9-10k memory usage, when the interface is open 30k, and when it is scanning 75k. It is not really slowing anything down, I was able to use Photoshop and browse the web without a noticeable lag. With Avast, running just Photoshop bogged the system down.

I also ran a full virus scan, 180k files took about an hour to complete. Brought up some random tracking cookies, but that was about it. AVG also scans office files upon launch, it takes about an average of 5 seconds to go through that - so not too bad.

Overall, it is running lighter which I like, but I still want to test it some more. I am going to load some junk on here and see how the detection rate is compared to Avast.

The reason I keep comparing it to Avast is because that is the free a/v I recommend to customers. I was recommending AVG before that, but once AVG 8 came around I was done. So now I would like to put the 2 head to head to see which will take my number 1 spot. :)

I think AVG8 was a disaster, you could feel the bloat right after the initial install. I think they rushed 9 out and it feels tighter but I have to see if causes any trouble as I only installed it on two machines today.
