Alright, here is my experience so far.
The box I was testing it on was running Avast prior too. The Avast program was running around 40k memory usage when it was NOT scanning, and went as high as 90k when it was scanning. As far as the specs it is a PENT 4 2.67ghz, 2 gigs ram, Windows XP.
I downloaded and installed AVG 2 times. During the first installation it gave me an error and completely shutdown the installation. No error code or description, nothing in the event logs, so not sure what happened there. The second time it did successfully install. It took about 6 minutes to install the entire program (I enabled all the add-on's).
The program itself is running a lot lighter, when it is just sitting idle it is running at 9-10k memory usage, when the interface is open 30k, and when it is scanning 75k. It is not really slowing anything down, I was able to use Photoshop and browse the web without a noticeable lag. With Avast, running just Photoshop bogged the system down.
I also ran a full virus scan, 180k files took about an hour to complete. Brought up some random tracking cookies, but that was about it. AVG also scans office files upon launch, it takes about an average of 5 seconds to go through that - so not too bad.
Overall, it is running lighter which I like, but I still want to test it some more. I am going to load some junk on here and see how the detection rate is compared to Avast.
The reason I keep comparing it to Avast is because that is the free a/v I recommend to customers. I was recommending AVG before that, but once AVG 8 came around I was done. So now I would like to put the 2 head to head to see which will take my number 1 spot.
