Got a notebook i this morning with a blackscreen asking for the infamous BIOS Password. customer does not know how it got set - claims she didn't do it and no one else has used it. anyway we tried the normal stuff - remove CMOS battery, short pins on battery connection. Was trying to run Hirens CMOS utility but can't boot to CD.

Called ASUS Tech Support???? - the sort story - mail it into ASUS, they will reset it - Cost ONLY $380. Not bad for a $229 computer.

Anybody had any experience with this? Toshiba and Dell and sometimes HP we have been somewhat successful bit not so much ASUS.

TIA

Hmmm...

I suppose a workaround would be to purchase a replacement motherboard from ebay, if it can be found at a reasonable price. Problem is, with the mobo, teardown, installation, etc., doesn't leave much wiggle room for a profit on a low cost budget laptop.

Did you try any of her other passwords? Maybe she inadvertently got in there somehow and set it.

Thought I ran across one of those quite some time back. Seems if they're no powered on for some time, they flip into that mode, which is really just silly as hell. I'll try to find the website, but as I recall I used (the wrong) password 3 times and it popped up an alternate screen with a code. I had to enter that code into a website and it brought up a "master" code that unlocked the beast.

Are you sure she owns the notebook? You might want her to tell you what is on the notebook before you give it back to her unlocked.

I'm guessing you tried the simple things like the users Username and also PASSWORD or password and BIOS or bios.?

Every time I think about getting lost passwords it reminds me of a guy that used qwertyuiop as his password, when he told me his password I was like what, then he pointed it out on the keyboard, I was like OH that is what your were saying.

Did you use one of these bios-pwDOTorg or tech-faqDOTcom/reset-bios-password.html
You have to enter the checksum/hash code only (without the braces).

It was along those lines. As I recall it was an administrator password, not a bios password. It seems to me that I could get into bios, but couldn't change anything.
