Apple's new wireless ear buds.

I heard a lot of people comparing them to socks. You will always be missing one of them and never know where it went. Plus at $160 they are way too expensive so I will be sticking to wired.

I'm sure Apple and the like will be claiming "innovation" and "Apple's first!" in no time... disregard the dozen 'truly wireless' earbuds already out.

Apple's Phil Schiller described Apple's move to a new wireless chip as "fixing the challenges" of wireless audio in a keynote address this morning, and that Apple has the "courage" to ditch the headphone jack.

Oh goody!

Apple's new W1 chip uses regular Bluetooth for connectivity

Oh.

The ultra-low power Apple W1 chip operates at one-third of the power of traditional wireless chips, enabling AirPods to deliver up to 5 hours of listening time on one charge. The custom-designed charging case holds additional charges, for an industry-leading more than 24 hours of total listening time,* ensuring AirPods are charged and ready to go whenever you are.

So, if that's industry leading, why do the Onkyo W800BT's provide 12 hours of music playback and 15 hours of talk time? The Onkyo's were first to market first quarter 2015. It comes with a 'charging case' as well for 5x charges.

The Dash and The Headphone from Bragi have been Kickstarted for over 2 years now and have all of the same 'features' as the Apple earbuds. 3 axis accel, noise isolation, gesture control, tapping, bone conduction mic, IR detection, etc.. Looks to me like they're playing catch up.

Oh, Samsung has the Gear IconX released in June.. catch up for sure.

This will be interesting. Apple has not been one to shy away from trying to push changes in the computer market place. Of course not all have been successful but they did lead with things like no FDD, no opti drive, and a GUI. But others have not really succeeded, like the AIO computer. That dates back to the original Mac and has never been a real success no matter who has tried.

Did you see where they have built in gps, and they ring if you press the "Lost button".

Me either.

Yeah, this is a tough one for me. I have had 2 awesome bluetooths in 4 years and the first one had to be replaced because I left it in a hotel room. I know I would lose the buds in hours because of my hair and whatnot. No thanks, but hey...if they stick well, who knows.

Er Motorola already tried making a phone without a headphone jack and had to go back to putting one on their latter phones due to public outcry. Of course Apple fans are far more forgiving so they might get away with it. Either way I wouldn't say it has anything to do with courage, more to try and force people into buying Apple or Beats headphones.

Yeah, I wouldn't call it courage either. But it is a gamble. It's just possible there's a limit even Apple fans won't be pushed beyond. We haven't seen that limit yet, but maybe this will be it.

I personally detest iPhones, but I have to support them. Over the years I've marveled at design and interface choices Apple has made for their Acolytes and how often those odd choices are greeted with glee, happiness and rejoicing by the same. Truly, Apple has created a very peculiar market and following that should be the envy of every other company on earth.

[Allegedly] stolen from Xerox Park, but thats a whole other story! Lol

Actually Apple paid Xerox to spend time at PARC and subsequently several from PARC went to work at Apple. Other companies, like M$, spent money and time there as well. And, of course, there have been many lawsuits over the years about this. I think they finally were all settled a few years ago with everyone going their separate ways, no big losers or winners, well except the lawyers winning the most

Yesterday I was in Boston installing some 60" touch screens at schools and chatted with a Ricoh tech, who was trying to repair an Aficio 7502, that had been dropped during the move. LOL!!! He had cut his teeth in the printing business at Xerox. One of the first comments he made was how some companies just can't make new things work or adapt. We talked about how some companies manage to change and evolve, like IBM and Apple. Others which have created innovative products, like RIM, Kodak and Polaroid, were never able to break out of the mold.

Funny you should say that. Before the announcement, I noticed that many of our customers using Apple products were being less than excited about the new iPhone. When the earbud thing came out, I've actually had two saying that they are going to Android as they are not going to be ripped off.

Perhaps Apple have taken people for granted a bit too long....?
