Have a 2012 15" macbook Pro with the suspected U8900 solder issue here.
Machine wouldn't boot properly, froze whilst loading OS, managed to boot to Windows ok, booted to a USB installation of High Sierra, left it backing up files, next day no life.
put some pressure on the area where this chip is and got it to boot again, so went ahead and attempted to replace the solder on this chip, everything seemed ok, but now it won't power on at all.
have checked it multiple times now and redone the solder joints a couple of times with no joy.
Information on how to perform the repair seems abundant on the WWW but not much detail otherwise (I guess as its such a straight forward job), I did read on one businesses facebook post that too much heat can kill the GPU MOSFETs but no-one else seems to mention it.
Any thoughts on what I could check ?
