For those not following this, AMD's RX480 video chipset/card was released just recently. Just a bit ago there was a lot of complaining about the card that it drew too much power from the pcie bus. The upper limit on the bus is suppose to be approx. 77 watts of power. This caused a lot of concern and AMD came out with a driver fix to shift the excess power draw to the P/S connector. So, That is fixed quite easily.

What is so nice about this card is it is in direct competition with Nvidia and their released GTX1060. The AMD scored very well against it using the recently released DX12 from MS and Vulcan. What makes it such a hit is that the AMD RX480 is priced out at 200.00 bucks compared to Nvidia's GTX1060 at about 600.00.

So, The card is basically sold out at a lot of suppliers and they are taking advanced orders. What is happening with those suppliers that still have some stock of them, They are scalping the price. Just checked newegg and the card for 239.00 is sold out. The other offers are in the 330/50 range for price.

ZEN - Its the name of AMD's newest processor that is built on the 14nm wafer. Its due out (rumor) this october and there is also a version slated to take on the server market. Later in 2017 they are going to combine the RX480 on the Zen processor to my understanding.

Timing on these is a hell of a thing, so hard to get just right.

I'm more interested in the GTX 1070, but I'll be waiting until
after it gets below it's stated MSRP. Even at MSRP, the 1070
is better than a pair of AMD 480's from some of the data I've
been looking at.

At this point, with how little I game any more, I'm starting to question
if I need another $300+ GPU to sit around and depreciate. I've down
that twice in the last ten years now, and all of the gaming done on both
$300 + GPU's would easily be under 300 hours. If it weren't for Diablo 3,
which is basically dead to me now, that figure would easily be half as
much or less.

That could make the 480 more attractive. All I'm looking for is decent graphics
performance with the ability to drive 2+ monitors. But then again, I can probably
do with much cheaper than a 480.

I really do not game any more. I run mostly linux and just a VM of windows for quickbooks. So, I really do not need anything special. I run a GTX-650 and it does everything I need it too. However, If I were gaming I would go with dual 480s as the difference in performance between the 480 and the 1060 shouldnt be enough that I would notice. What does seem to make the 480 pretty attactive is the Vulcan and DX12 libraries (if you can call them that).

What I really drool over is the up coming Zen processors. I am very interested in moving up to them if I can afford it.

Today was a great day for AMD stock. Looking for 6/share before earnings - probably wednesday :)

Hopefully AMD isn't hanging its hat on the number of threads / cores
this chip will have.

A big part of multi thread / core performance is in how well the applications
are written to utilize threading. This was talked about long ago, and while
you would expect over time that some progress has been made in terms of
getting developers to think about multi threading, there is still a lot of room
to go there.

The other part I wonder about is where is Intel going to go next? This "Zen"
processor is a multi year in progress answer to the core architecture. What's
to say Intel won't soon be unveiling their next big thing, putting AMD right
back where they were?

Don't get me wrong, I like healthy competition. It drives costs down and drives
up the value the consumer gets as a product. I don't really care who's on top.

I have always liked AMD. I love it when they stick it to Intel.

To answer your question - Intel is just lazy. What they will do is take some i7 chip and neuter it badly and put it up against AMD instead of being inventive. Thats typical with leaders in industry. Look at GM. They made junk cars and the European Market ate them up.

AMD' s plan is to directly compete with Intel. If they make processors anywhere close to the speed of intels but at a much reduced price then they win - Athlon anyone?. Same with their graphics cards.

Thing is, AMD is extremely inventive. That is what I really enjoy :)

I dont know how many shares you bought or at what price but I can tell you exactly what happened :)

The shorts were in heavy in AMD expecting a disapointing quarterly report. The stock traded in a very tight range for the week heading into earnings. This means that anyone that was sure about their view of the outcome was already in. So the stage was all set so too speak.

Those that got in late (around 4.80 +) started to get scared the day of the earnings release. They started to take their profits and get out expecting a bad outcome. Some set stops. Others had planned to get out that day all along. So, The price sagged into a low of 5.10 by closing. This price drop embolded the shorts to stick to the course and they did not have to cover. When earnings came out AH and AMD beat the street, The price immediately started to climb backup into the 5.50 range and thru today has steadily went up to about 5.85.

What happens now on monday? A lot of traders have cash accounts and must wait for their money to settle. This will take a few days. They are sitting thinking "I can still get in as it hasnt passed 6.00 /share yet". So, They will start getting back in on monday buying shares and driving the price up again a bit. There is a psychological barrier at 6.00/share right now. When we pass 6 /sh it will be a buying signal to others to get in and the shorts will then begin to get margin calls and have to cover by buying stock. Then its going to really move up.

Eventually there will be a pull back as traders take their profits. Good time to get in. Then hold for the balance of the year.

I have done very well :)

Sorry about the image insert failures. Trying out a new site.

It would be nice to start a forum on those here that like to work in stocks. Either here or on a newly created site. But I would want to keep it tied to technibble members and we could work on stock plays - long and short - and share information on stocks.

My thinking is, There is a certain percentage of ones money that basically sits in a bank account. The banks give terrible interest and it might better be served to have it work for you in stocks. That is the conclusion that I have come to. I always keep enough in the back for minimum requirements and meet expenses but then there is a certain portion that just sits there.

Anyways, I have looked all over the place for a decent stock forum and they are all spammed up and I do not trust any opinion in them. Some are just very old posts. I think a private forum for a select group of traders - either beginners or more experienced - with a lot of posting options - pic sizes, video posting ect... would be pretty cool. I am not talking about day trading. I think thats basically gambling and most lose. I am more centered around approx 1 month trades or more. Being able to find a decent stock and being able to play it out. I would also like the emphasis on how to really invest in stocks - The stuff you do not read in someones book thats on the shelf just to make them money. I am talking about stuff they never talk about in books that is the real key to stocks - IMHO.

I got lucky!!! I claim no skills in the market at all. Most of my 401k and IRA are in various mutual funds. I'm just a blind squirrel that saw AMD was trading at $1.65 a share earlier this year (Or was it last year???) and bought a few hundred shares on a whim one day to add to my nut pile!

Who'd a thunk it??? :)

@1on1 - This is how I see AMD for the rest of the year. Of course doing your own due diligence is important and you never know the world could melt down and die. But besides all that :

AMD is going to be a 10.00 stock sometime before the end of year. Its going to continue to trade up and pull back a bit but with the graphics and processor releases - they will show up in 3rd and 4th quarter earnings. So, Those quarters are pretty much in the bag.

I think we are going to have some sideways action starting tomorrow with a dip to a lower price as some continue to take some profits and we consolidate.

I took half my available funds and was able to get back in at 6.05 so I have 500 shares. I am keeping some ammo dry (so to speak) because I expect a pull back from this large jump up. Then I will buy up 500 more shares.

What an excellent move getting in at 1.65. With Lisa at the helm now AMD should really pop and become a great long term hold.

Here is a place I like to hang out to read the comments on AMD - > http://stocktwits.com/symbol/AMD

I do get some stock tips now and again from people in there but I am always kinda wary on them and have to be researched quite a bit.

I look forward to tomorrow :)

I'd REALLY like to get educated on investing into stocks.

I mean in all honesty, I probably could have put a few hundred dollars into AMD
and while it's not quit your job money, my few hundred could have potentially
been turned into a few thousand in fairly short order.

My current 401k plan has been doing TERRIBLE. I do get a decent company match
so that money is basically a return in a way... in the fact that I don't get that money if
I choose not to invest. However, the combination of my money plus the company match
has earned less than 1% ROI over the last two years. Pretty terrible if you ask me.

I'd keep that plan, and only put as much in as necessary to get the maximum match,
but the rest I'd like to put else where. Problem is, I just do not know anything about
investing.

So yes @coffee, I think that's a great idea!

I am willing to put in some time to construct a forum to discuss what I have learned over the years of trading stocks. Would this be like every other site out there? No. It would only be a site to share insight and lessons learned in dealing with the stock market. I would like to share my knowledge with others. It would be free. Am I some kind of expert? No. I am, on a scale of 1 to 10, About a 7. But I have learned some things a long the way that others might benefit from.

I run a server at my shop and I can put together a forum for a few people that have the inclination to learn a bit and share what they know. Will you get rich? No. But its better than listening to 95 percent of the stupid forums out there and their advice.

AMD right now - If you get in around the 6.70 / .80 range then I would think thats good. I see support at 6.50 . Which means that if there is a down trend it is possible that 6.50 is the bottom. I do expect this stock to cross 7 because AMD is doing a lot of exciting things under new management - Lisa, The new CEO.

Currently, I have 500 shares of AMD. I am in at 6.05/sh. I plan to buy more on the dips.

So, I will work on putting together a very small forum to discuss this and take it off the technibble boards where it really does not fit in. Hopefully, Working and learning together we can make some decent pocket change or better.
