Ah, sweet proof

Sad isn't it. I mean Vista should have been great but they made it so difficult for users to live with. I tweaked mine and love it but you have to turn off so much stuff and so much older hardware is not supported.

Microsoft really messed up for the first time. I think they should've did a bit more beta testing before they released it. But windows XP, when it first came out it had problems to, until SP2. I love XP, and will probably keep using it until they quit supporting it. But I think Microsoft will straighten out the kinks, until then, MAC's are going to sell more.

I think Microsoft has been beta testing Vista, for about a year and a half now.
I used a program called vlite to go in and remove massive amounts of useless crap from Vista, then tweaked the hell out of it and installed SP1. With all of this done, its almost usable on a very fast machine. Still no where near as stable as XP, Linux , or OS X.

I will also be staying with XP until they stop support. As for Mac sells they have increased by something over 37% sense Vista came out. I even bought my first Mac because if it. I now dual boot OS X and XP Pro SP3. There is no software I can't run and I don't miss Vista or its glass one little bit.

Because of Vista I'm actually starting to recommend to my new customers that they get a Mac if going to XP is not an option.

vista bashing

This vista bashing is getting old, so tired of hearing people like gunslinger pushing mac in every forum post.... ive had vista on 3 machines from day one and guess what?? no problems, I did have one driver that didnt work at first, but that was reissued by the printer vendor and it works fine now. I even have an 85 year old on it since like the first month, and she has no problems. Its way more secure, i do 2-3 virus jobs a day, and only one vista so far. I also work in it at a fortune 500 company, and half of our it staff uses it without issue. And as far as drivers now, install vista, then install xp, notice xp needs you to put in the drivers, yet vista finds them no problem. Ill admit its not a big jump in speed, but if youre not cheap and can upgrade, its no problem. (especially with ram and vid card pricing now)

As far as i.t. deptartments recommending switching, ive been in it for years, and my wife too, and no business ever wants to upgrade, heard all the same with xp when it came out. These it organization all have programmers who design their web software to work on the exisiting os, so of course they dont want to start all over again.

Just remember....8% share....overpriced....lack of aftermaket hardware...and most apple users own a pc or boot camp to do what apple cant, but how many windows users need apple...none that i know..lol.

To start with I don't push Mac in every single forum post. I also recommend XP. Both are far better choices than Vista.

Just remember market share is no indacation of how good a product is, Windows machines are so popular because you can pick one up at Walmart for $298. The cheapest will always be the most popular.

Overpriced? Not when compared spec for spec, and when you take into account you are getting a much higher quality product with a far better OS. Also you get to speak with someone who speaks english when you call tech support, not someone who spweaks engrish.

I do own 4 PCs and I run bootcamp, the reason? I have the best of both worlds , I can run anything Mac or PC. Lets see you dual boot your Vista machine with OS X.

sorry gunslinger

Sorry if i came off wrong in that post, just got done with a nice osx/vista debate minutes before reading your post....after all, we all work on the same team, and computer problems make us money:)!!

I do think that most of dells cpus have pretty good quality parts, at least in my dealings with them, and so far, all ive gotten is good tech support from them...although, i love their support chat, much faster and easier, and they are cheaper than a mac.

In the end its all about preference i believe, my wife is a mac tech, and loves em, but she also loves vista too and uses it most of the time, but she's also an artist, and thats where the mac comes in nicely. I guess i just wish apple would let others build cpus with osx on it to drive prices down.

One point though, switching os systems to the normal person is quite an ordeal. At work, I had a doctor who's xp crashed and he lost some info. So he ran out and bought a mac. Next day he comes to me asking where everything is on it and how to use it best. He ended up going back to xp cause thats what he knew, and I think thats alot of whats happening out there, the regular guy with no cpu knowledge fears change. And for those folks i understand why they keep xp and dont go to vista or osx.

Its ok. I have been in a few heated debates lately ( read wars ) on youtube about Vista, and "setting OS X free".

As long as both sides can stick to facts and figures its all good. The problems start when people let emotions take over and their feelings for one product or another take over. Thats when the personal attacks come in and the name calling starts.

No hard feelings.

1 and 3 people are afraid of their own shadows...any slight change in their computer and they will have a conniption. You have to remember that for a lot of people Windows XP was their first OS. When ever someone asks me to downgrade I ask them why and they either "[insert name of bad tech here] told me Vista is bad" or "I don't know how to do anything on this new computer" I explain that all early vista problems have been fixed and I patch them up. Then show them all the features and how to do things like that did in XP. After that I ask them if they still want to downgrade and they always say no and I call them up a week later and they tell me how much more they enjoy their computer now that I helped them with the new OS.

Vista for me has been the most rock solid and secure OS even more so then Win2k Pro.

I was going to partialy agree with you Until you said this:
"[insert name of bad tech here] told me Vista is bad".

Why is he a bad tech because he does not like Vista and is trying to make life easier for the customer and himself ?

"I explain that all early vista problems have been fixed and I patch them up"

They most certainly have not. I, as well as many of my customers still have all kinds of problems with Vista. Its better than it was a year ago, but still no where near XP in terms of stibility or compatibility.

If a customer is having computer trouble it is the techs job to find the cause and solution...not oh downgrade to XP. If you go to fix a XP machine and its not working you don't say oh lets downgrade to Win2k, right?

Like what kinda of problems? Give me some examples of some of the issues you've been experiencing.

I have found Vista has been extremely stable. I will give you compatibility though, but its not MS fault that software and hardware manufacturers aren't updating old software/hardware to work with Vista.

It is better than a year ago. It will probably continue to get better and more stable. Only problem is that by the time it is solid Windows 7 will be out.

Agreed.

No, but to someone thinking about going to Vista I would strongly advise against it.

Look at some of my posts from the epic Vista battle I was in on this site a while back and I'm sure I listed a small fraction of problems I have had with Vista. Its about 17 pages long.

Hopefully Microsoft will learn from the Vista "experiment" and Windows 7 will be everything Longhorn was supposed to be. If not, I think Linux and OS X will hurt Microsoft in coming years.

Agreed.

I just read the 17page thread. So basically your trouble was running 3rd party software and flaky drivers? Have you tried Vista Sp1 yet? (in an actual environment, not virtualization).

Are you too young to remember ME?! :D

3rd party software, bad driver support, random freezing, very slow, blue screens, black screens, Zip files taking much longer than they should to open, inability to disable or remove useless components and features, Massive memory hog, constant indexing of the HDD.

This is a small list of some of the problems that I , fellow techs and customers had.

Like I said, some of these issues have been fixed or made better with SP1. I have tried Vista on non virtual environments on many customer PCs.
