Hi guys,

Hoping you can help with this one.

I have an Advent 4211b netbook that won't boot up. It loads the bios ok and live cds work fine. Apparently it had a virus and the owner tried to clear it himself. He apparently tried running stopzilla from a flash drive and now it wont boot.

I have run a live cd and managed to retrieve the customers data from the documents and settings folder.

I then ran a virus scan using an Avira cd which picked up 49 infections.

I have managed to get to the recovery console in windows and tried running fixboot. This didn't work so I did a cfg rebuild list. Microsoft windows xp edition is listed with a message "load options:no execute=option /fastdetect location c windows.

I have also listed the directory in C: and the boot, boot.ini, bootmgr, ntdetect.com and ntldr files are there.

What do you think my best course of action is next?

Cheers,

John

How far does it load up?
Have you tried running chkdsk from the recovery console?
Was there any stop codes?
Can you restore from an earlier backup?

Hi guys,

I have now got a bit further with this. Using the ultimate boot cd I managed to get back to the windows safe mode screen. Tried last known good configuration and that failed. I can get the machine to partially boot in safe mode before a stop error comes up which says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damages to your computer. if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again follow these steps: check for viruses on your computer. remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. technical information: *** STOP: 0x000000"

I have run chkdsk r which corrected some errors but the f command wasn't available from the recovery console. It only lists p and r under the help menu.

Is there anything else I can try or is the hard disc too badly corrupted?

Cheers,

John.

That is a funny looking stop error, isn't it a little short STOP: 0x000000??

Any files listed with the BSOD?

Have you ran a system file check with ERD Commander?

Have tried loading a restore point using ERD Commander?

Hi guys,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have had a lot of problems trying to get this message down because there doesn't appear to be the normal menu for stopping windows rebooting on a blue screen and it literally flashes up for a micro second. I finally managed to get a good shot of it with a camera.

The full stop error is:0x0000007b, 0xF78C3524, 0xc000000E, 0x00000000, 0x00000000.

Will try ERD commander.

Cheers,

John.

Using "sfc /scannow" might help if you can get in to safe mode all the way. I think you can do it from within UBCD so long as you set the path to C. Might wanna try downloading "bluescreenview" then use it from within UBCD. It's free. Just make sure it's reading from the C drive. That might give you some more info.
