Well it's finally happened, after 3/4 years of daily use, my Zalman ZM-VE300 has sadly died RIP :-(

Small chip explosion on the pcb, stinks. It took out a Desktop PSU at the same time.

So, is anyone out using the newer ZE350? if so is it as good as the 300?

Or do you have a better recommendation?

I have the 400 (with the integral keypad) that I bought a year or two ago. Played around with it few times but haven't gotten around to actually using it yet. Seems a good bit of kit though.

I'm not sure what i would use the keypad for, so just sticking with a 350.

Looks like that 400 is discontinued. But the device itself continues to exist, and is much less expensive, as the iOdd 2541 ( http://goo.gl/O8XQMB ) Although I have no idea what the numeric pad is for.

Until now, I didn't know the iOdd brand still existed. I first bought one of them 5 years ago (An iOdd 2501 - it's still going strong). Then I thought the name changed to Zalman - because that's what everyone here was talking about. But now I see that they're actually 2 different companies building/selling the same devices.

So long story short, when looking for a Zalman device, check out the iOdd's too. You may get the same thing for less money.

I saw one on Ebay today but thought 'cheap knockoff copy'. Was about £10 cheaper than a Zalman, so haven't lost much.

I don't know about the new iOdd's, but my old 2501 was reasonably well built and has functioned flawlessly for a long time. Two years ago I bought a lightly used Zalman (don't recall the model offhand) from another Technibbler and I'd say the quality and function has been identical.

Other than one being silver and the other black, I might never think about which one I'm using. The iOdd stays on my workbench, and the Zalman travels with me in my backpack. I just reach for whichever is closer.

One of those indispensable tools that I use but rarely give thought to.

When I ordered my Zalman ~6 months (VE-300) my local distributor had no issues sourcing out the 300.

That may not still be true, but I was expecting him to come back with the 400 only... so I'd make some calls first... they still exist.

I bought one of the iODD devices about 2 months ago since I couldn't find any Zalman ones available for reasonable prices. Been working perfectly fine and seems to be of the same quality as the VE300 I also have.

Ok, so I have the new Zalman ZE-350 up & running, and it's ok.
The display is now illuminated, which is nice, the jog wheel on the side is the same but the menu is slightly different but not a problem.

What don't I like? Well the ISOs all live in a folder called _ISO as with the old 300, I used to have my ISOs categorized in folders within _ISO, so I would have folders called AV, OS, Utilities etc. this does not work on the 350. :-(

All ISOs are now mixed up together in the one _ISO folder, about 20 of them so far, and I now have to jog down this ever lengthening list to find the one I want.

I know it's a small thing, but it's very annoying.
