Complicated. I personally like people challenging TPTB. But somehow I am not a fan of this guy.

If you play with matches you'll eventually get burned. And if you don't stop you'll keep getting burned, not to mention burning down your house and everything around you.
One thing is for sure. The US will never stop going after him. So if he ever gets to the point where he can travel somewhat freely his options are extremely limited for safe destinations.
Generally speaking people like that have huge egos. And those egos need to be fed, which isn't happening when you're told to be quiet. They also tend to not think too much about others nor the consequences. They just focus on the "big, bad wolf" and seem to forget about all of the other little critters that get caught up, and sometimes destroyed, in the subsequent maelstroms.

They are in the US as well. But that does not necessarily absolve someone from criminal charges based on something else they might have done.

Yeah... the Assange case is hard for me. I don't have much of an issue with the whistle blowing, and there is much going on in the US that we wouldn't know about without him. So I thank him for the critical information at a critical time.
But, he also used unethical means to get that information, injured a serviceperson in the process. And put countless other military professionals in harms way in the process. I think he needs to pay for that...
But how to balance the two? I just don't know.
