Yesterday I was installing SP3 on my laptop and ran into an error. It got well into the patch and hung up on beethov9.wma. It said it could not copy the file and gave you a couple of options including retry which didn't work. Ultimately the update would fail.

This one is an easy one to figure out with a google search but with some of the fixes I found you could potentially do more harm than good. So here is the easy fix:

Go to Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents(maybe Shared Documents). Go to sharing and make sure "Allow network users to change my files" is checked. You can now hit retry and it will work. You can undo the sharing after the update and all will be fine.

As I said it's a pretty easy one to find a fix for (and I'm sure most of the work arounds probably work but may cause problems down the road). I hope this saves some time and headaches.

yes sometimes you can recieve this error when doing a repair install on windows xp using a sp1 disc or sp2 when repairing a sp2,sp3 install respectively.
