Long story short, I'm doing a repair install of XP Pro after a major infestation. Ran through the initial setup, rebooted, loaded all the devices and finished the setup, rebooted again, got to the balck screen with the XP logo and it says "Please Wait...". So I wait....20 minutes later nothing. The mouse cursor is there, in an hour glass, but there's no HD activity. So I reboot and this time it appears to be fine, I get the Welcome screen and then a message saying I have to activate windows before I log in appears, so I click yes to activate and nothing happens. I'm sitting at the desktop with the mouse cursor, the desktop wallpaper and no icons, CTR-ALT-Del doesn't do anything. It's been sitting here for 30 minutes, no HD activity...no clue what else to do. I went through the entire process a 2nd time and have the exact same issue.

Tried in Safe Mode but got a message saying I couldn't activate in Safe Mode.

If I click No to activate is does take me the Welcome screen where I can click on the profile.

Anyone have any thoughts?

bummer, been there, done that, you'll most likely need to nuke & pave, get a boot cd and get the data off and perform a clean install.

when you say you can click on the profile, does it load? if so i would guess that perhaps the extra drivers are faulty, also if you haven't done anything to it yet perhaps just nuke and pave

Right after I click on the profile I get the message saying I need to activate it. I would like to avoid a nuke and pave becuase the client does not have all the cds for all of her apps. I do realize that it might be my only option at this point.

Before you N&P

Before you N&P I would try Iward1's advice and remove IE8 and/or IE7

From the Recovery Console with XP and SP2 or SP3:

Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

For Windows Internet Explorer 8
CD ie8\spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt

For Windows Internet Explorer 7
CD ie7\spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt

From the Recovery Console with XP without SP2 or SP3:

Type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:

For Windows Internet Explorer 8
cd \Windows\ie8\Spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt

For Windows Internet Explorer 7
cd \Windows\ie7\Spuninst
batch Spuninst.txt

Note: The IE7 and IE8 folders are hidden folder.
