Hey Technibblers!

I have machine that required virus cleanup last week and it also had file association problems. I thought I got it all cleaned up when the customer brought it back, not because of a virus issue, but he went to install his WOW DVD (this being a Windows/Mac disk) and the disk comes up with all the Mac files on his computer and he can't install. I tested the disk on another XP machine and it works fine.

So now I can't figure out why this XP computer reads the Mac session on the DVD. Anyone?????

Thanks!

Did you try to explore the DVD and run the Windows version of the setup?
I'm not familiar with the layout of WOW.
Also, if you had file association problems I would recommend checking this out: http://www.technibble.com/xp_fileassoc-bat-xp_exe_fix-reg-repair-tool-of-the-week/
There are other things we could try that have to do with the registry.Yet, if the DVD is being read by the computer, the DVD drive shouldn't be the problem. But let's not mess with the registry yet to be on the safe side.
Complete the above two tasks and see what happens. Good Luck!

Checked again that there were still association errors. Reset the XP associations and put the DVD back in after a reboot. Autorun did not kick off and browsing the CD showed me the Mac files again. I turned on the feature to show hidden files and who-la! There were the windows install files. Not sure why they were hidden, but at least I was able to install the game. Will let the customer test it out. I'm thinking that if there still are strange issues, then it time for a nuke and pave!

Good Job!

The problem your were having is really unique. I've never heard of it.
One other thing you might do is to clean up the registry with a reg cleaner.
Maybe that can pull out some sort of registry corruption.

I'll try that, but honestly, I don't use any reg cleaners regularly. What would you recommend?

I'm very particular of reg cleaners too. I've always had poor results with most of
them.
But, I Do use Eusing free registry cleaner on my personal computer.
Very regularly I might add.
As far as professionally, I haven't had to as of yet. But the Wise registry cleaner seems to work pretty safely for me,
while I've been testing it. Some of the problems I had were from using the CCleaner to clean my registry. It deleted too much.

Just as a followup... finally gave up and did a reinstall. There were still a few quirky errors that related to file associations. I thought I had it licked, but I really didn't want to hold the customer up anymore on my experiment.

I agree,
We need to experiment on our own time.
Though I still can't find anything about your particular problem you were having.
It just seems to have been some sort of registry corruption. Its the only logical conclusion.
