XP NTBackup

I am not really experienced in the windows backup utility so please bear my feeble questions. I have set it up to run at a specific time on a specific day.

The question is does the pc need to be switched and logged on for the task to run? Will the pc 'wake' at the specific time to run this scheduled task?

It is so confusing with all the different backup options ie copy, normal, incremental etc -

here is the scenario

Small home office - 2 networked computers
Only the 1 pc needs to have the backup run every Friday @ 5:00pm
Which is the best backup method using ntbackup?

If that is too complicated for you, buy Second Copy. This is very easy to configure.
You will have to read on the types of backups available. It makes no sense to post a description of them here, since Google will do the job. Read several articles about it, some are better at teaching you the difference than others.

NTBackup (or most other backup programs) requires your PC to be on in order for any scheduled tasks to run its backup unless you can do WOL (Wake-On-Lan) at a specific timing to wake the PC up.

Personally I've had bad experiences with NTBackup, whereby restore sometimes didnt work and had to resort to a backup recovery program to read that .bkf file. But your mileage may wary. NTBackup also has the useful ability to backup the system state.

One unrestricted freeware that I find is easy to use is FBackup (http://fbackup.com/). Clean, simple interface that works. Its also a good idea to readup on the different types of backup types available (Normal, differential, incremental, etc) so you can recommend to your customer.

Personally, if space and time permits, I prefer a daily full backup of their important folders and complement it with a monthly image backup. Don't forget to test the restoration when the job is done!

Thanks for the info, what I have done is set a NORMAL backup for Monday.

Then for tues,wed,thurs,fri I have set a DIFFERENTIAL backup that is set to run @ a specific time and overwrite previous.

Tested on my other machine and worked fine, and yea I made sure to test the theory as well
