Got a quick question for you. I have just installed VirtualBox on a Windows XP Home SP3 machine.

I'm setting up a virtual XP Home with Virtual box, but Windows is asking for a product key to complete the installation. Do I insert my product key that I used for my "real" installation of windows which is an OEM key by the way and i'm using the disk that the computer came with from the manafacturer. Or is there some other way.

Per the license, you need to have two different keys. A virtual machine counts as an individual computer, in Microsoft's eyes.

That is just typical. There is always something that gets in the way!

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there any other way around this which is still legal?

Remeber the PC you have has a license on the side.

Did you know that the windows installation is using another license?

Verify it first but remember, if you redo your virtual PC after a while microsoft will have you call them because of so many registrations. If you dont call them then you wont be able to use the key anymore.

The legit way is to buy another.

licensing is a pain. I write down Keys of computers I am getting rid of solely for testing if I need it.

btw, these were my computers, not clients of course.
