Wubuntu - A Linux like Windows

Anybody tried it yet? It's been done before. I'll probably install just to check it out for curiosity. I'd like to try it on a Windows user.

Back in the 2003 era I think Walmart sold a PC that had Linux that was supposed to be like XP, it was "Lindows" or something...

It would certainly fool the average end user until it becomes time to install programs that WINE is compatible with.

Yeah, thanks I couldn't think of the name of that one. I tried it and it was ok, but it soon bit the dust....sued out of existence.

It's been around for a couple of years....it's not new...from some guy from Brazil....hit its website and then follow the Facebook link bottom of the page...scroll through his stuff.

Pretty easy to see why you shouldn't use this, or expect it to be around for much longer.

It's called Linspire now I think?

But yes there are several Linux distro out there now designed to look and feel and interoperate as similar to Windows as possible.

My personal favorite is Linux Mint.

Wubuntu has placed itself in the crosshairs of Microsoft AND Canonical...

The link I showed was alpha releases, apparently they are up to Release 14 now and it's not free you gotta pay.

They wont last long charging for it. There other "Windows like" alternatives like ZorinOS that are completely free.

Linspire has been around for 23 years. Even Wubuntu is on version 11 and been around 14 years (formerly LinuxFX which does show up in Distrowatch) and is free. The Pro version costs money just like the Pro version of Ubuntu.

I've not tried this one but have tried all the other Linux looking like Windows distro's. Eerily they all seem to look the same from what I remember. I think it's more of a quest for the holy grail of computing - displacing Windows as the dominant OS in the retail market. Which isn't going to happen.

Yup. It isn't just a "look and feel" thing, either, which some people delude themselves into thinking. The embedded software base as well as general knowledge base of how Windows works, even slightly below the surface (though people don't even realize they know some of this long after they acquired the knowledge) is just immense. It's like an iceberg where what can be seen on the surface dwarfs what lies beneath the water.

Those who believe that Windows will ever be displaced by Linux (or, likely, anything) in the retail market either in residential or business are just deluding themselves. Inertia alone and the human resistance to change simply guarantees the sticking power of Windows.

Why? I'd say the kind of discussion and information sharing it's triggered is quite interesting and valuable.

Knowing why one might not want to take a certain path is just as useful as knowing why one might.
