yep its a system file thats needed
had a customer today with a crappy mcafee install that had a firewall that wouldnt let anyone in the office access the quickbooks db on it
so after pulling it out and installing security essentials it quickly picked this file up as a virus, so i quaratined it and it asked to reboot
came up with a winlogon error and the system bluescreen

luckily ERD2003 saved the day and let me roll back the system since last known config didnt work

it allowed me to boot the computer , luckily i had the sense to save the favs,docs and desktop folders before rolling back ebcause when it rolled back it reset all his user data. so after copying his files back over i try to install essentials and it still picks up w2_32.dll as a virus
im like screw it lets remove it again to see to see if i blue screen, yep it panicks again

so now im like wtf do i do , i tried sfc /scannow but it was taking forever

finally to fix it i pop in my xp pro cd go in the i386 folder and using the cmd prompt i use this command

expand ws2_32.dl_ c:\w2_32.dll

reboot with ERD and rename the old dll to dll.old and then copy the new dll from c: to the system32 folder, reboot and voila! success anyhow this problem coupled along with issues on 3 other computers (viruses slowness, networking issues) i was there for about 5 hours ,still trying to figure if i bill them for all the hours or cut them a break

Situations like this is exactly why I flat rate virus removal. Come up with a number that would make a 3-4 hour removal worth it, but also make a 1 hour removal reasonable. My number, $95.00.

To be fair, when I get into this position of a long repair because I have to learn something new or use an unconventional tactic, I carve the "learning time" out of the rate.
I guess you could say that I charge them as if I already had the tool in my toolbox and knew how to use it.

Please don't misunderstand, I am not saying that you don't have the skills. I am just responding to the point about the billing.

well it wasnt like i was just working on this one computer there was a 3 other ones i was shifting back and forth between while i was trying to correct the issue, all which had problems with expired antivirus apps , email issues, and needed cleanup etc, so if you figure 4hrs x 4 computers it really averaged out to 1.25 hour per computer


i only charged them for 4 hours when billing them today
