Small and midsize businesses have most--if not all--of the same IT needs as larger organizations, but they lack the resources and dedicated IT departments to manage them. At the same time, small-business managers and owners would rather focus on effectively running their companies than on trying to resolve various computer issues.

Unfortunately, technology requires maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. For assistance with those tasks, small and medium businesses (SMBs) have a choice between relying on independent IT consultants and working with IT services from big-box stores.

In most instances, the technicians at big-box retail chains are not just low-wage sales reps wearing a different hat. Usually they have at least some entry-level experience as technicians, and in some instances they may obtained certification such as CompTIA's A+, which demonstrates expertise with basic PC hardware.

Nevertheless, big-box IT service techs rarely possess the experience and skill typical of a successful independent consultant. The big-box role is essentially entry level, and technicians who build up significant experience tend to move on to greener pastures.

That said, what do the large retailers offer, and can their tech support do the job for a small business?

Geek squad being the first choice :P go figure.

your thoughts on this?

Either you didn't link to the "insulting" article, or I'm missing something.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty fair overview of "big-box" solutions vs Independents - where Independents come out ahead in general and in the author's final recommendations.

Where's the insult?

I feel the same way. I was expecting something like the article calling independents all hacks and thieves the way you titled this thread. Got to admit I only read the text you pasted and didn't go to the link, but still..? Maybe you want to narrow it down to the specific phrase or sentence in that paragraph you quoted as being "insulting"?

IMHO, these surveillance setups they do to some of these independent shops do a lot more damage to independents then what I've seen here. Not saying some of these hacks they catch don't deserve the bad press, but they should at least throw in a disclaimer.

The article recommends people check out local people instead of relying on big box stores, but that big box stores are okay in a pinch.

I recommend that SMBs seek out and forge a relationship with a competent and trustworthy local independent consultant. Finding technician you can trust takes more effort than driving to the neighborhood Best Buy, but the dividends are large. You can start by checking with your local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau.

Still, the big-box chains are probably fine in a pinch. If you can't find a reliable consultant in your area, or if you just have a one-off tech need to address, the familiarity of a brand name may offer you some peace of mind.

Word of mouth from fellow business owners is one of the best ways to find high-quality IT support. Track down a local IT consultant you can trust, and establish a working relationship that lets you rely on the person's skills and expertise as an extension of your business. Think of that consultant as your IT department on demand.

Really not seeing anything against independents at all in this article.

Big box chain stores can be good in a pinch if they have good techs. I worked at Staples as an EasyTech, wasn't the most glamorous job, or the highest paying, but it kept my head above water. Another tech as an IT guy at the local school district, he was there 2 days a week and only did it for a little extra cash.

Honestly I am not seeing whats insulting ether.

It honestly was an article telling people that independents like ourselves are better then big box stores.

I honestly hope more articles like this come out. It makes us look good, as we should.

I have to agree with the previous posters. I'm not insulted by this article at all. I actually book marked it to use on my website some day. Probably in a blog if I ever get around it. :o

I felt they made a good argument for "Independent Techs". I myself have been told many times by people who are much happier with the services I perform over Geek Squad. I never meet anyone in my area that has used Office Depot and we don't have a Staples yet.

Yeah, I made a mistake in naming it, i realized that after i posted it, sorry guys.

I will admit it is a great article though, my apologies.

Josh, I'd like to you ask you though, how would you have named your post if you didn't get all the comments. I'm curious as to how you initially perceived it to be? Was it insulting to you? Just wondering....-:)
