Hi, I have a windows 7 64 bit here with msft word 07 associated with all programs, it even loads on boot. All icons have changed to word also. I thought for sure it was a virus, but offline root scans and regular scans have found nothing. Process explorer, malwarebytes (normal mode)SAS, webroot, kaspersky, tdss, hijack this, nothing. I tried file association fix, sfc, and office diagnostic. Any clues?

I had a similar issue some weeks ago.

Have you right clicked on one of the desktop icons, then properties, and opened the program up with the right name?

ie, power dvd, open with power dvd, and not word..

I know there is a easier fix than doing this for all the icons, I will find it, and post back shortly.

Have a look at this..

Go to http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html

and download the LNK fix zip file:

Extract the lnkfix_vista.reg file from the zip you download onto your desktop.
Double click to merge.

Though it says Vista, the keys are the same as in Win 7.

huh, interesting. Yeah I've seen file association issues usually fixed by the reg key downloads you guys mentioned, I've also seen viruses rebreak the reg key to prevent that. I'd try an offline scan with an AV just in case, and there's the remote possibility that the hard drive may need a drive fitness test (DFT) to see if it's failing, and if that test passes perhaps a chkdsk /r?

I tried to right- click and merge and got a error that it couldn't merge because some files were in use, used a boot cd and bingo! Great, thanks guys!!! I was about to nuke&pave this thing!!!
