Wolenstein 3D

I do remember the Far Cry engine. Was it also the first to introduce lingering damage to terraine/objects?

They had a bunch of firsts with the Cry Engine Here's the X-Isle demo they made as a precursor to the first Far Cry. It's the original video that got things rolling for Crytek. Kind of fun to look at 20+ years later.

Still playing Far Cry 2

Far Cry 1. A bit revolutionary at the time
I have Far Cry, Far Cry 2, 3 and 4 in my library, but I don't play them because I dont like them.

A friend just bought Far Cry 5 (on sale) and she streams while I watch.

We seem to spend more time marveling over the details on tyres, pipes, concrete stairs, trees, rocks etc than actual gameplay...😆

Yes CryEngine
heavily got into that. I actually got paid to teach about modding on that engine Can it run Crysis @YeOldeStonecat

Apogee software the best shareware in the land. The origins of fps.

I wandered out into the room whee my wife had her computer CRT monitor that how long ago it was she is playing DOOM 3D on the monitor she is walking down a hall THEN I NOTICE she is leaning to the right in her chair almost looking behind the monitor as she tried to see what was aroun dthe corner. She could NOT play this game before going to bed or it would either keep her awake or give her nightmares. Wolfenstein 3d took an hour or two of my life purely for R&R

GOG recently sent me a discount on the Doom franchise so I bought the entire mess again, Doom 1 - 3, all the variations that were released of them all. It's 10 games, modified to work on current machines and it set me back all of $8.

But going back to the OP, I played a ton of Wolfenstein 3D back then, but what I played more was Corncob 3D: https://pieskysoft.miraheze.org/wiki/Corncob_3D

That is awesome, carmack was a crazy programmer similar to howard hughes. A really focused programer minus tissues and issues with therein.
