Wix vs. Wordpress

I am still needing to build myself a business site. The current site (not live) is just a mishmash of ideas I have had and I recently realized that I may need to blow it all out and start over, which I am ok with. The reason being is that the way I want to organize the site, it was suggested that I use the "network" option. Well, this is something that should be done during the install, not after. There is a method to do it after, but it's not guaranteed to work, thus starting over.

My site concept is that users will go to www.<mysite>.com and on the front page they will have two buttons too choose from; "Home" or "Business". This means one site for home users and the other for business users. Clicking on "Home" will bring the user to one part of the site, while clicking on "Business" will bring them to another part of the site. I want both sites to potentially have a different look and feel to them. Obviously "Home" will list prices and services directed towards home users, while the business site would list all prices and services directed towards businesses. I am not sure what the URL's would look like, but I'd imagine something like www.<mysite>.com/home and www.<mysite>.com/business

Now to change gears a little. I have a site that I help with that uses Wix. Ill be honest, the use of Wix is very slick and fast. It makes updating a website very fast and effective. Now with all of that said, I am not by any means a Wordpress wizard, but I have learned a lot in recent months to be able to put some basic stuff together, but could I possibly be better off (in ease of use, especially with what I am wanting to do) using Wix for this over Wordpress?

The only thing is, I already have a server to host on, and would much rather not add on another monthly bill that I really don't need nor want.

Any help, advice or direction with sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with Wix but I think I saw one of their commercials. I would bet that if you ever decide to move your site to another website provider your not going to be able too. If that is the case then I would go with Wordpress. Heck, I would do wordpress anyways because it is pretty good. If you do not have experience with website design then perhaps its one of those things that you will farm out to someone else.

To comment on the first part of your post, I would lean towards creating two totally separate websites. In my experience, you'll get much better results with one website devoted entirely to businesses and one devoted entirely to residential clients as opposed to giving them the choice up front...which may cause confusion or even prompt the visitor to leave the website if they aren't sure which bucket they fit in to.

That will also prevent the business clients from being nosey and looking on the residential side and seeing how much cheaper the prices are there compared to what they're paying. Just something to consider.

And as far as the platform, I'd recommend WordPress all day long for a business website. Wix is fine for a hobby site or getting a website up for fun very quickly, but if you're building a business then you should have a more flexible, reliable, and extendable platform like WordPress because you'll eventually run into roadblocks with Wix.

Good luck and send us a link to the site(s) once it's completed!

I also agree with Wordpress. I always considered WIX to have a first-time, "Cookie Cutter" result - While it may get the job done, it leaves a lot to be desired before, during and after.

Well this is all helpful. Now to figure out what to do in regards to the domains. I already own "coderedtechnologysolutions.com" not really wanting to come up with something longer and not sure if adding "home" or "business" in anyway is the answer. May require a bit of creativity on my side...lol

I started out with Wix, I liked how easy it was to get it going but SEO sucked and so did the ajax linking. I quickly got tired of it and moved onto Wordpress. Much better platform and allows you do a lot more customization for what you need.

So, my creative juices have been flowing. I never thought that I would ever consider this, but may at this point it might be worth considering. What if I did something like mydomain.support as apposed to mydomain.com? Is there any benefit to having your TLD be .com as apposed to .support or anything else for that matter?

I still have not completely convinced myself on my current domain, and maybe I should I have before purchasing it, but here's what I am thinking. I still feel my domain is just to long and since being faced with the possibility of adding a subdomain, that's only going to add to it. I'm now thinking, maybe something like coderedtech.support (clever right?) ;) and then I could do something like home.coderedtech.support and business.coderedtech.support Thoughts? Good idea? Bad idea?

Just doing a simple Google search and seeing that there is a "Codered Tech Support", this has me heavily contemplating going back to the drawing board for a business name. Ugh. The struggle is real...lol

What about something like coderedtech.com? Or CRtech.com? I would go .com over any other domain name any day.

Maybe we can help coming up with an alternative business name.

coderedtech.com is taken. I have tried just about every variation I could think of. That's kind of the other reason I have been going back and fourth on the idea of a new name. It would help to stand out from the "noise".

A lot of people say that having the .com doesn't really matter, and it probably doesn't ... but I feel it looks more professional. I am a stickler for having all the TLD's (com, net, and org) as well as popular social sites (Facebook & Twitter). It took me a long time to land on my name, and actually my wife is the one that thought of it so props to her.

If you are going to build 2 separate sites, I would not use code red for the residential site. Use something like yourtowncomputerrepair.com, basic and the home user will know what you do, also it will be better for S.E.O/Ranking. When John smith has viruses he will not connect code red technology solutions to some one who can fix his computer.

Just to make sure I understand your suggestion completely, are you saying for the home side do "StFrancisComputerRepair.com" (Thats my city) and then for the business side do "mybusinessname.com"? Perhaps still use "My Business Name" on both sites? but that doesnt make complete sens either if the user goes to "StFrancisComputerRepair.com" and the front page says "My Business Name", that could confuse people quickly and make them feel they are at the right site. As far as the business name, I'm not sure if I want to lock myself into using my city name either.

On that note, I have been thinking a bit more on a name. We have a river, "Rum River", that goes through my city and a number of companies have used "Rum River" in their business names, but I'm not sure I want to do the same. I got my brain working over time with all sorts of ideas, but not one has completely stuck yet.

When I want to get something on the web super fast, I go with Wix. They improved alot over the last year. They worked with google to get the whole SEO thing and AJAX thing worked out. Wix sites always ranked terribly. I have a few sites now that rank very well.

I do plan to move one of my main sites to wordpress at some point, the hashbang symbols are sooooo annoying.

How about StFrancisOfAssistance.com :)

Seriously, I actually called my business Selby Computer Repair for several reasons. One, it says it all really. Two, people in my area actually type in to Google "selby computer repair", or "computer repair in selby" or a variation. Google sees the "in" as what it calls a stop word and ignores it.

Guess who comes up top for any of these variations?

Oh, and Wordpress all the way. It's good for the guy starting out who knows nothing all the way up to .php proficient coders who can tweak the gubbings of it.
