Wiring for ethernet.

Three things:

First many or most munis and states do regulate electricians but not cat 5. installation. That is the topic as I understand it. I am not trying to say what an electrician has to do or not do.

Second, I was responding to those who stated that most or all munis or states require licensure and that is not true.

Third, my response was a bit tongue and cheek.

There are enough things someone starting a new business has to attend too I see no need to make them jump through hoops chasing down wrong ideas.

I came across that site in my search on this topic and completly ignored it due to being wrong.

In - VA

Electricans (high voltage) require licensing (sp on phone) in addition to standard biz lic.

Alarm/cctv/signal monitoring - business needs addtl lisence in addition to standard biz lic AND all employees need to be registered and perform bi-annualy in seevice training w/ background checks.

Low voltage wiring is biz lic... that's it.

So take that site with a grain of salt, they are wrong about VA so I have very little faith in them elsewhere

1. Actually, cat 5 and any wiring installation is regulated in a lot of areas. There are building codes, etc, that must be followed. There are rules against plenum vs non plenum wiring, etc. Making a blanket statement that it's not required is generally a bad idea.

2. Your posts were before any of that. In fact, your post saying "Not in kansas. I doubt where you live" was second in the thread. Then, your second post was that "since california doesn't, you probably don't". That might be tongue in cheek, but at that point nobody had mentioned much else...let alone anyone saying "Most states or municipalities". Hence, it's terrible, logically false advice.

3. Sure, there ARE a lot of things that people have to tend to when running and starting a business. That doesn't mean you can just overlook something just "because". The thread was asking for specific information about doing things the right and legal way. Providing bad advice could potentially get someone in trouble... (ie, may he DID need the license and later on gets fined for not having it.)

I'm done with the thread, the question has been addressed ...beyond that I don't see any further point in arguing.

Someone tightened your griddle a bit too tight today. you completely ignored my post that said to start any search for license requirements at the City/Muni zone and code enforcement. They have all the information you need or have to do. So I am pretty sure you are the one giving out harpooning about nothing.

In the same post you said "In MO I wouldn't worry at all, just go for it."

I don't get what you're trying to say here. You've been saying, almost the entire thread that there's no reason at all to worry about it... And I'm saying that you're giving terrible advice. It's really that simple. Seriously, though, I'm done.

It is not really what I have said that is in question but why are you over reacting to it?

Are you an unemployed low voltage cable installation guy is that what your problem is?

my posts

  1. No, It sure doesn't in Kansas. I doubt where you live either.
  2. HI Frank,

Yeah if Frank can do it in California which has more laws than all 49 other states together, then I am safe in saying you are covered.

    :):)
  3. The people who write the tickets are City zoning or code enforcement. So I would start with a call to them.

CA has a state electronics and technology license which is $170 per year per worker and its the workers responsibility to get it. I think this is just to track you if they get customer complaints about ethics..and to raise money.

In MO, I wouldn't worry at all. Just go for it.
